Job Description

Summary

This job involves leading a team of inmates to install, maintain, repair, and inspect mechanical and electrical systems inside a state prison facility.

This position is responsible for the supervision of a prisoner crew in the installation, maintenance, repair and inspection of various mechanical and electrical systems within the Lakeland Correctional Facility.

The position works within the secure perimeter of a Level 2 correctional facility and supervises inmate workers on a daily basis.

Requirements

Education
Educational level typically acquired through completion of high school.

Experience
Five years of experience assisting skilled trades workers in the mechanical or electrical trades, including one year equivalent to a Maintenance Mechanic E9.

Qualifications

Completion of a recognized program in vocational training for the mechanical or electrical trades may be substituted for two years of experience assisting skilled trades workers.

Some positions in this job series may be assigned duties that require the application of pesticides, which may require certification or registration as a pesticide applicator in compliance with the Pesticide Control Act of 1976.

Some positions in this job series are assigned job duties that may require possession of the commercial driver's license issued by the Secretary of State as required by Public Act 346 of 1988 to operate a designated state vehicle.

The Department of Corrections may screen out job applicants who have been convicted of a felony in accordance with Public Act 191 of 2017. Applicants who have been convicted of a misdemeanor or felony are ineligible for employment with the Department of Corrections until satisfactory completion of any sentence imposed, including parole or probation.

New hires to the MDOC along with previous MDOC employees that are returning after being away from the department for more than two years will complete Non-Custody New Employee Training (NCNET) either 40 hours or 80 hours of initial in-person training based on their level of offender contact and job classification. All new employees will complete additional online training to successfully complete their non-custody new employee training.

This is a drug and alcohol test designated position.

This position is eligible for $0.40/hour pay premium.
