About this position:

Under the supervision of the Construction & Maintenance Supervisor for the San Juan Park Area, this position independently performs a variety of responsibilities to include performing general maintenance, repair, remodeling, and construction duties utilizing a working knowledge of several related skills, such as electrical, plumbing, carpentry, painting, and mechanical work. The Maintenance Mechanic 1 installs, repairs, inspects, and maintains physical facilities (i.e., buildings, facilities, grounds, docks, floats, moorage buoys), and maintains and repairs machinery and equipment within the San Juan Area.

This position is not eligible to telework, as physical on-site presence is required to perform essential functions.

The San Juan Islands are home to 16 Washington State Parks. These Parks contain some of the most impressive historical structures in the State.

For example, the lighthouse at Lime Kiln State Park was first lit on June 30, 1919, Moran State Park’s log cabins were built by the CCC beginning in 1935, and the 53’ stone tower atop Mount Constitution was completed in 1936.

For those who know building, the craftsmanship, vision, and fortitude shown by these builders is truly awe-inspiring.

Today, the San Juan Area team strives to live up to this level of professionalism as we protect, maintain, operate, and restore these historical buildings, along with the other hundreds of other structures, dozens of vehicles, vessels, equipment, plus over 40 miles of trails with bridges and 9 potable-water systems.

We even operate a dam or two, ensuring the correct flowrates are present for downstream users/water rights holders.

All this is to say: The work is plentiful. Some unique, some routine.

The conditions are often challenging - especially logistically (we use boats to maintain island parks) – but you will be joining a team of professionals who are here because they choose to be.
