About this position:
Under the supervision of the Construction & Maintenance Supervisor for the San Juan Park Area, this position independently performs a variety of responsibilities to include performing general maintenance, repair, remodeling, and construction duties utilizing a working knowledge of several related skills, such as electrical, plumbing, carpentry, painting, and mechanical work. The Maintenance Mechanic 1 installs, repairs, inspects, and maintains physical facilities (i.e., buildings, facilities, grounds, docks, floats, moorage buoys), and maintains and repairs machinery and equipment within the San Juan Area.The San Juan Islands are home to 16 Washington State Parks. These Parks contain some of the most impressive historical structures in the State.
For example, the lighthouse at Lime Kiln State Park was first lit on June 30, 1919, Moran State Park’s log cabins were built by the CCC beginning in 1935, and the 53’ stone tower atop Mount Constitution was completed in 1936.
For those who know building, the craftsmanship, vision, and fortitude shown by these builders is truly awe-inspiring.
Today, the San Juan Area team strives to live up to this level of professionalism as we protect, maintain, operate, and restore these historical buildings, along with the other hundreds of other structures, dozens of vehicles, vessels, equipment, plus over 40 miles of trails with bridges and 9 potable-water systems.
We even operate a dam or two, ensuring the correct flowrates are present for downstream users/water rights holders.
All this is to say: The work is plentiful. Some unique, some routine.
The conditions are often challenging - especially logistically (we use boats to maintain island parks) – but you will be joining a team of professionals who are here because they choose to be.

CORE COMPETENCIES:
Multi-Disciplinary Technical Proficiency
The ability to apply cross-functional working knowledge across carpentry, plumbing, electrical, masonry, and mechanical systems.
Equipment & Vessel Operation
Proficiency in safely operating and maintaining a diverse fleet, including light/small engine tools, trucks, marine vessels, and heavy machinery (brush chippers, chainsaws).
Safety Leadership & Risk Mitigation
Mastery of PPE requirements, confined space protocols, and the Parks Risk Assessment Program to identify and neutralize workplace hazards.

Effectively coordinating with management, area staff, and volunteers to ensure project completion.
Increasing and developing knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Taking responsibility for learning and adapting, rather than relying on others to fill gaps.

Uniform Information: All Maintenance Mechanic 1 employees are required to wear a uniform.
A complete and properly worn uniform helps establish the professional identity of a Maintenance Mechanic and promotes respect as a Washington State Parks employee.
All Maintenance Mechanic 1s will receive 6 shirts within the first year (2 shirts per calendar year after the first year), 1 jacket every 3 years, 1 baseball cap every year, 1 safety vest every 3 years, and a clothing stipend of $200 per year, and a $250 boot stipend every 2 years.
Uniform stipends are intended to offset the cost of clothing worn in the workplace such as pants, boots, raingear, etc.
