Mail Process Driver | Teamsters
Full-Time Non-Permanent Position

Salary Range: $3,936 - $5,213 Monthly

The Department of Corrections is seeking a highly motivated and qualified individuals for the position of Mail Process Driver at Cedar Creek Corrections Center in Littlerock, Washington.

CCCC is a 480-bed male facility. The facility is located in the Capital Forest 20 miles south of Tumwater.

CCCC is co-located with the Department of Natural Resources and is a minimum-security facility.

This facility houses minimum security incarcerated individuals and offers treatment, work, and vocational programs to help ready incarcerated individuals to transition back into the community.

CCCC is a sustainability prison; some of the many programs include rehabilitation of ailing Western Pond Turtles, raising bees, training service dogs, and composting.

The site includes two living units, a health clinic, education buildings, a gymnasium and support facilities.

All incarcerated individuals work at this facility either on an off-site work crew or within the facility grounds.

    Requirements

    This position supports DOC’s mission to improve public safety by positively changing lives through the visual, physical, and electronic inspection of incoming and outgoing mail and packages in effort to eliminate risks associated with unauthorized transfer of contraband materials and information across institutional boundaries.

    The Mail Processing Driver independently performs mail services including, collecting, screening, sorting, processing and delivering domestic and foreign mail utilizing the US Postal Service, agency internal mail systems, and various ground and air shipping services.

    Duty:
    Screen/process all incoming or outgoing first class and bulk mail, periodicals, packages and electronic messages.
    Tasks include:
    • X-ray and visually scan all incoming mail items for potential contraband explosive devices illegal narcotics and conformity to established policies and procedures
    • Log, open, and inspect mail and packages for incarcerated individuals to ensure conformity to all applicable policies and guidelines
    • Remove money orders for separate processing
    • Remove and document enclosures (i.e. Social Security cards, marriage/birth certificates, ID cards, insurance cards, etc.)
    • Document and enter all incoming incarcerated individual packages
    • Document and enter incoming publications
    • Place approved items into mail slots, bins and or small bags for delivery to living units
    • Determine most effective method for sending mail items and packages out of facility
    • Complete mail rejections for items that do not meet DOC policy for delivery
    • Read electronic messages in accordance with facility, agency, state and federal laws, rules policies and guidelines.
    • Process incoming and outgoing mail in accordance with facility, agency, state and federal laws, rules policies and guidelines.
    Duty:
    Identify, catalogue, and report contraband and mail/electronic messages that do not comply with facility, agency, state and federal laws, rules policies and guidelines
    Tasks include:
    • Initiate contraband/mail rejections and maintain documentation. Initiate infractions as needed to the item
    Duty:
    Deliver and collect mail and packages, including bulk, insured, registered, certified, and regular mail and maintain electronic and physical mailroom records. Operate, adjust, and maintain electronic equipment for the screening, mailing and shipping of packages.
    Tasks include:
    • Properly log and create mail rejections, publication rejections, incoming I/I property receipts, incoming I/I funds, allowed I/I to I/I correspondence, I/I no contact orders, and I/I letter translations
    • Accurately identify incoming staff and incarcerated individuals mail and packages, and deliver to intended office, building or unit, by established procedures
    • Conduct secure deliveries of sensitive items/evidence to outside departments
    • Collect outgoing mail and packages from units, offices and building for mailroom processing
    • Use hand trucks, dollies and mail cards to transport materials
    • Will operate motorized vehicles to deliver and collect offender and staff mail and packages
    Duty:
    Provide information, answer inquiries, interact with various stakeholders, and resolve routine problems.
    Tasks include:
    • Provide customer service to stakeholders including DOC staff, outside agencies, and the public
    • Respond to inquiries and resolve complaints from incarcerated individuals and their family members; respond to kites and kiosk communications
    • Respond to staff inquires and requests for information regarding mail services and processes.
    • Answer calls and forward messages as appropriate
    • Assist with public disclosure requests by obtaining information from files and Offender Management Network Information (OMNI)
    • Assist with responding to formal resolutions as delegated
    Duty:
    Other duties as assigned.
    Tasks include but are not limited to:
    • All other tasks as assigned to you by the supervisor, chain of command and/or incident commander
    • Maintain and order needed equipment and supplies
    • Maintain the security, order, and cleanliness of the mail room

    Qualifications

    What we need (required qualifications):
    • High School diploma or GED equivalent
    • Two (2) years of office and/or clerical experience
    Knowledge Skills and abilities:
    • Basic level computer skills with Microsoft Office or similar programs.
    • Ability to perform office assignments which require knowledge of a variety of regulations, rules, policies, procedures, and processes

    Telework Details

    This position may be allocated for telework.

    If authorized for the role, work may be performed from your home or another offsite location within the state of Washington using a reliable internet or cellular hotspot service at that time.

    Employees are expected to perform assigned duties in a safe manner, to take proper care all state-issued equipment, and maintain confidentiality of all information in possession while working offsite.

    Employees will be required to commute to a Department of Corrections facility or field office as business requires, to potentially include components of the onboarding process.

    Some offices will have a “drop in” area available, however, a dedicated workspace within a DOC facility will not be provided.
