This job involves working as a machinist in a naval shipyard, helping to set up and run machines like lathes and mills to repair and build parts for ships, while following safety and cleanliness rules.
It's a hands-on role for someone starting out in machining who can work independently and aims to become a full journeyman.

You will serve as a MACHINIST in the MECHANICAL SHOP, PRODUCTION RESOURCES DEPARTMENT of PORTSMOUTH NAVAL SHIPYARD.
Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying.
Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.

The Screen-out Element for this position is: ABILITY TO DO THE WORK OF THE POSITION WITHOUT MORE THAN NORMAL SUPERVISON: *Assists in the set-up and operation of various machine tools, including lathes, boring mills, milling machines, shapers, planers, precision grinding machines, and specialize or multi-purpose machines.
*Assists with overhaul and repair of job-related valves, components, and pressure testing of machine parts. *Complies with cleanliness requirements and safety procedures.
*Demonstrates ability to perform successfully and satisfactorily all assigned duties.
*Performs tasks without close supervision with the objective of eventually qualifying for Machinist Journeyman status.
