No assumptions will be made about your experience. To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade of the position to be filled.
To qualify for the GW-09 grade level, 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to GS/GW-07 is required.
Examples of work experience include but are not limited to: performing lead wildland fire dispatch duties such as: performing and directing others in wildland fire dispatch office functions; providing incident logistical support information, and making recommendations for efficient use of available resources; and determining appropriate resource responses to incidents.
To qualify for the GW-11 grade level, 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to GS/GW-09 is required.
Examples of work experience include, but are not limited to: coordinating mobilization of resources utilized in wildland fire incident support; ordering resources through a wildland fire dispatch system; and providing guidance for wildland fire logistic support and dispatch coordination.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social).
Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Substitution of Education for Experience: GW-09 - Successful completion of at least 2 full years (36 semester hours) of graduate education or a master's degree which is DIRECTLY related to work of the position; OR an equivalent combination of specialized experience and education.
Substitution of Education for Experience: GW-11 - Successful completion of a Ph.D.
or equivalent doctoral degree OR 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree OR LL.M., if related OR an equivalent combination of specialized experience and education.

Long hours of sitting, intense concentration, and working at peak proficiency level with irregular breaks and mealtimes are frequent, prolonged demands of the job.
The incumbent is subject to work shifts of 12-14 hours per day for extensive periods. The work requires active physical capacity with extensive standing and walking.
Work Environment: The work is normally performed in an office but trips to field offices, wildland fire sites, prescribed burn sites, and airports or remote aircraft landing sites are common.
There is regular and recurring exposure to moderate risk and discomforts such as high temperatures and adverse fire weather conditions. Flying in small aircraft is common.
This is a secondary/administrative firefighter position under the special retirement provisions of 5 U.S.C. 8336(c) (CSRS) and 5 U.S.C. 8412(d) (FERS).
While secondary positions are not subject to the maximum entry age policy, the selectee must have prior service in a primary position (3 years of service in primary/rigorous position(s)) and meet the transfer requirement for movement from a primary to secondary position to be eligible for special retirement coverage.
