Job Description

Summary

This job is for a lieutenant overseeing environmental health and safety at a correctional facility, involving inspections, training staff and inmates on safety, investigating incidents, and ensuring compliance with regulations to protect everyone involved.

Key Requirements

  • High school diploma and three years of experience in correctional, security, military, or police work
  • One year of supervisory experience (or equivalent degree in criminal justice or related field)
  • Successful completion of eight weeks of SCDC Basic Training upon hire
  • Certification by the SCDC Training Academy and completion of basic supervisory course within six months
  • Ability to conduct inspections, provide safety training, and investigate hazards and incidents
  • Knowledge of OSHA regulations, hazardous materials handling, and workers' compensation processes

Full Job Description

  • Completes inspections of facility to ensure compliance for all phases of institutional fire, safety, and sanitation as it relates to policies and regulations.
  • Provides guidance and consultation to institutional personnel to ensure compliance with environmental health and safety programs.
  • Provide safety training for both staff and inmates and conduct inspections to ensure that they properly perform all assigned duties and post procedures in a safe manner.
  • Investigates reported hazards, accidents, injuries, and other incidents which impact health, welfare and safety of employees and inmates.
  • Ensure all documentation of such is completed and forwarded accordingly.
  • Ensures control and proper use of all hazardous materials/contaminants in accordance with policies and procedures.
  • Ensure all workers’ compensation is completed, entered and forwarded in a timely manner.
  • Completes and maintains OSHA log and other documentation.
  • Ensure adequate safety of public, inmates and institutions.
Must successfully complete eight (8) weeks of SCDC Basic Training upon hire

Requirements

State of South Carolina Minimum Requirements:

A high school diploma and relevant experience. A bachelor's degree in a related field may substitute for the required experience

SCDC Minimum Requirements:

  • A high school diploma and three (3) years of experience in correctional, security, military, or police work to include one (1) year of supervisory experience.
  • A degree in criminal justice or a related degree may substitute for supervisory experience year for year (associate and above = 1 year).
  • Must be certified by the SCDC Training Academy and successfully complete the basic supervisory course within six (6) months of entry into the position.
