Job Description
Summary
This job involves leading a team of security staff at a medium or maximum security prison, ensuring the safe custody of inmates, and maintaining order in the facility.
A good fit would be someone with experience in corrections, law enforcement, or the military who is ready to supervise others and handle high-pressure situations involving inmate management and staff oversight.

- Three years of experience in correctional, security, military, or police work
- One year of supervisory experience
- Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice or related field may substitute for experience
- Must complete eight weeks of SCDC Basic Training upon hire
- Must be certified by SCDC Training Academy and complete basic supervisory course within six months
Full Job Description
- Under general supervision, plans, coordinates, and directs the actions of the security staff and oversees security, custody and control of inmates in assigned unit(s) of a Medium /Maximum security facility.
- Assumes primary responsibility for security for all buildings and public property.
- Makes routine checks of the unit(s) to ensure subordinate staff are performing their duties properly and safely, and that cleanliness and OSHA standards are maintained.
- Assists with all inmate counts for accuracy.
- Investigates complaints and violations; arbitrates disputes among inmate population and correctional staff.
- May work operations.
Must successfully complete eight (8) weeks of SCDC Basic Training upon hire.

State of South Carolina Minimum Requirements:
A high school diploma and relevant experience. A bachelor’s degree in a related field may substitute for the required experience.
SCDC Minimum Requirements:
- A high school diploma and three (3) years of experience in correctional, security, military, or police work to include one (1) year of supervisory experience.
- A degree in criminal justice or a related degree may substitute for supervisory experience year for year (associate and above = 1 year).
- Must be certified by the SCDC Training Academy and successfully complete the basic supervisory course within six (6) months of entry into the position.
