Job Description

Summary

This job is for a library technician at a military base library in South Carolina, where you'll help patrons check out books, answer simple questions, organize materials, and maintain library records and systems.

It's a hands-on role involving customer service and basic library tasks, with some physical work like lifting and shelving.

A good fit would be someone organized, customer-friendly, and comfortable with routine library duties, even without advanced experience.

Key Requirements

  • One year of specialized experience at the next lower grade level, or two years of education above high school, or a combination equating to 100% of qualifications
  • Ability to perform direct public services like registering patrons, charging/discharging materials, processing overdues, and handling reserves
  • Skills in assisting with interlibrary loans, shelving materials, preparing displays, programming activities, and answering basic reference questions
  • Experience in technical support functions such as basic/copy cataloging, ordering/receiving/processing, and de-acquisitioning library materials
  • Proficiency in maintaining accountability records, performing shelf inventories, and conducting simple maintenance on automated library systems
  • Physical capability for standing, bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, pushing loaded carts, and lifting heavy items like boxes of books

Major Duties:

  • Provides technician support by performing a wide variety of direct services to the public: registers patrons, charges/discharges materials, processes over dues and reserves
  • Assists with inter library loans and reserves, shelves library materials, prepares displays, programs activities, answers basic reference questions,
  • Assists customers in locating materials; and/or provides technical services support in a variety of functions: basic/copy cataloging, ordering/receiving/processing and de-acquisitioning of library materials.
  • Assists in maintaining accountability records and in performing shelf inventories. Performs simple maintenance on the library's automated systems.
  • Incumbent may perform physical exertion such as long periods of standing, bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, pushing of loaded trucks; and recurring lifting of heavy items such as boxes of books or journals.
