Job Description

Summary

This internship involves helping the King County Executive Office's Budget Team organize and move their digital files to a new online storage system called SharePoint, including talking to staff about their needs and creating a plan to make it work smoothly.

It's a great fit for graduate students in library or information studies who want hands-on experience in government operations, learning about public service while working on real projects.

You'll get to collaborate with a team, network with leaders, and understand how budgets and policies are handled in a diverse community focused on equity.

Full Job Description


This intern will review file structure for King County Executive Office Budget Team and provide a recommendation and implementation plan for how to store and migrate records to a new SharePoint-based environment.

The King County Executive Office’s Budget Team is hiring interns to work with several different sections within the office.

Interns will gain a firsthand understanding of the workings of government, get an overview of how projects, policies, and legislation are created and implemented, understand why civic engagement matters, and build an appreciation for the importance of public service.

Depending on the assignment, interns may interact with a wide variety of people including staff, elected officials, community members, or program participants.

Interns will have the opportunity to be part of a high-performing team and take advantage of County training and learning opportunities.

Opportunities to engage as an intern cohort, network and connect with leaders across the organization, and participate in outings to various County operations add to the intern experience on the Executive Budget Team.

Requirements

  • Lead a project team that will develop guidance and standards for how the King County Executive Office Budget Team files its administrative and project records.

  • Interview a team of thirty staff to understand current practices, types of records generated, and business needs for file storage.

  • Become familiar with record retention policies for King County agencies and how these policies need to be factored into the new file storage system.

  • Develop an implementation plan to establish a new SharePoint-based file storage structure and migrate existing records into the new system.

Qualifications

  • This position is open to graduate students majoring in information studies or library sciences with an interest in government administration. Students in other programs with relevant interests and skills are also encouraged to apply.
  • Flexibility and the ability to adapt to new situations while working in a multi-faceted and sometimes ambiguous environment.
  • Demonstrated work ethic, ability to get things done, and independent time management skills.
  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Demonstrates attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently as well as with a team
  • Experience with Microsoft Office 365. Familiarity with Microsoft Teams and SharePoint is required.
  • Strong project management and organizational skills
  • Ability to manage multiple and shifting priorities
Education Level: Some graduate college course work completed

Additional Information

WHO MAY APPLY: This position is open to graduate students currently enrolled and continuing in the fall of 2026 in full-time status at an accredited university/college with coursework in the described areas.

Proof of full-time enrollment status may be required. WORK SCHEDULE: The work schedule will be Monday-Friday.

During the school term, the work week will consist of 10-20 hours at the discretion of your supervisor. During summer, the work week will consist of up to 40 hours.

These internships are expected to last until mid- to late-August, although the position may begin earlier or end later depending on project and scheduling needs.

Interns are expected to work in the office at least three days a week.
