A Premier Leadership Opportunity in a Thriving Bay Area Community!
The City of Alameda is pursuing an experienced library executive administrator with innovative strategic thinking and leadership skills to lead the Alameda Free Library as the next Director.

The Library Director reports to the Assistant City Manager and will work with an experienced, cohesive Executive Team. The Director will lead the Library in its ongoing mission of inclusivity, accessibility, and community involvement by fostering individual and community enrichment, resourcefulness, and connection. The next Library Director will explore and manage expansion opportunities including a new potential Alameda Point branch library and expanding the library of things.

The Library holds a special place with Alameda residents and is a critical service and community hub with a continued tradition of excellence and embracing innovation through its three branches and extensive online resources. The Library has 24 full-time employees and roughly 30 part-time employees who welcomed more than 215,000 people last year. In total, patrons checked out almost 760,000 items. The 2025-26 budget is $7.3 million. The Director coordinates across City departments and maintains strong relationships with the Friends of Alameda Free Library, community organizations, stakeholders, school district and other agencies. The Library manages the Alameda Museum agreement with the City and supports the City Council appointed Library Board.

Requirements

The ideal candidate to fill the role of the Library Director is:

  • An executive level leader experienced in library services with a record of innovation, community collaboration and program management.
  • A collaborative team builder experienced in working with community boards and volunteer organizations.
  • A positive communicator and effective in interpersonal interaction and authentic relationship building.
  • A proactive leader with commitment to effective employee management and engagement as well as equitable services for the community.
  • An innovative and creative thinker who champions new initiatives, including those that reinforce the library as an inclusive community resources.


This position requires a Master of Library Sciences or Master of Library Information and Services or related degree.

Qualifications

The Salary Range for the Library Director is $201,836 - $245,334 annually based on a 40 hour work week; placement within the range is dependent upon qualifications.

The City also offers a competitive benefits package, including:

Retirement Program – Classic members established with PERS on or before 12/31/2012 will be assigned a retirement formula of 2.0% at 55.

Employees hired on 01/01/2013 or later and who are not eligible for reciprocity with another California public retirement system, are classified as New PERS members and will be assigned a retirement formula of 2.0% at 62.

Classic members pay a total pre-tax contribution of 8.868% (7% employee contribution and 1.868% employee paid City contribution).

New members pay half the normal cost as determined by PERS, for FY22/23 New Members pay 8.25%. The City does not participate in Social Security; however, employees contribute 1.45% for Medicare.

  • Medical, Dental & Life Insurance – Pre-tax monthly allowance up to $2,881.17 City contribution towards selected CalPERS medical plan; depending upon health plan and number insured; dental insurance fully covered for the employee and all eligible dependents; and a $100,00 life insurance policy provided by the City.
  • Vacation – 160 hours of vacation per year, increasing according to length of service time up to a max of 200 hours annually.
  • Holidays – 11 observed holidays plus 6 floating holidays.
  • Sick Leave – 96 hours per year. Unused sick leave is converted to CalPERS service credit upon retirement.
  • Transportation Allowance – $250 per month.
  • Administrative Leave- 64 Hours per fiscal year - cashed out if not used.
  • Long-Term Disability – The City provides LTD insurance up to $8,000 per month.
  • Optional Benefits – Several optional insurance plans are available to eligible employees including vision, flexible spending account, dependent care program, long-term care, additional life insurance and 457 deferred compensation plans.
