Job Description

Summary

This job involves working as a librarian focused on serving teenagers aged 13 to 18, by creating programs, providing direct help in the library and at community spots like schools, and promoting library resources to parents and educators.

It requires handling a mix of independent tasks, like selecting books and resolving issues, while sometimes leading staff or stepping in for managers.

Key Requirements

Full Job Description

Under general direction, performs a wide range of professional library work independently and in accordance with general policies and accepted professional practices. The advanced difficulty of work assignments and the greater independence with which work is performed differentiates this class from the Librarian I class. Working conditions are primarily in an office environment. May directly supervise assigned staff.

Brook Hollow Branch Library - 530 Heimer Road, San Antonio, TX (78232) or any one of 28 Library branches.

Work Schedule
This position requires a flexible schedule, including availability for evenings, nights, and weekends.

Requirements

  • Cultivates strong participation and ownership of library services and programming by teens (aged 13 to 18).
  • Provides direct public services to teens (aged 13 to 18) in the library setting, through school visits and off-site delivery of library service in community venues.
  • Promotes library services for teens through engagement with parents, educators and other youth-serving community agencies.
  • Interprets Federal and State library laws and explains City and departmental policies and procedures to the public and staff.
  • Develops, plans, and implements public programming. Investigates and resolves complaints involving the public and staff.
  • Assumes the responsibilities of a branch or section head in his or her absence.
  • Provides direct reference service to the public.
  • Participates in library committee work and library-wide committee and task forces.
  • Conducts meetings, training sessions, and public programs.
  • Appraises, organizes, processes, and reviews library materials and selects materials according to the needs of users.
  • Promotes the use of the library by the community.
  • Maintains ready reference collections.
  • Compiles bibliographies, reference guides, newsletter articles, statistics and written reports.
  • Stays abreast of library and archives issues and trends.
  • Engages in long and short-range planning for the work unit.
  • Monitors use of branch collection or assigned area; assists with maintenance of collection in assigned area.
  • Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required.

Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in Library Science, Library and Information Studies/Science or Information Studies/Science from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited university.
  • One (1) year of experience as a professional librarian or three (3) years of professional experience relevant to the appropriate age based group.
  • No substitution for education allowed.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with teens (aged 13 to 18 years) in a public library setting.
  • Experience supervising daily operations of a public library location and/or serving as a direct supervisor to assigned staff.
  • Demonstrated understanding of current trends in services to teens (13 to 18) in libraries.
  • Ability to act as a team leader and work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Experience providing reference and reader’s advisory instruction and assistance.
  • Experience fostering and facilitating teen participation in the development and implementation of teen library programming.
  • Experience conducting outreach to teens in community venues including schools; advocating for teens in the library organization and community.

Applicant Information

Unless otherwise stated, applicants are permitted to substitute two years of related full-time experience for one year of higher education or one year of related higher education for two years of experience in order to meet the minimum requirements of the job.

One year of full-time experience is defined as 30 or more hours worked per week for 12 months.

One year of higher education is defined as 30 credit hours completed at an accredited college or university.
