Job Description

Summary

This job involves helping teens and the public find and use library resources, selecting books and materials for young adults, and running programs to engage the community in a library setting.

A good fit would be someone passionate about working with teenagers, creative in solving problems, and comfortable with flexible hours including evenings and weekends.

It requires a strong interest in youth literature and technology to meet the changing needs of young people.

Key Requirements

  • Master's Degree in Library Science, Library and Information Studies/Science, or Information Studies/Science from an ALA-accredited university (or obtain within 6 months of hire)
  • Passion for working with young adults (teens aged 13-18) in a public library
  • Knowledge of young adult literature in traditional and emerging formats
  • Ability to prepare and present library programs for various age groups, especially teens
  • Proficiency in reference services, readers' advisory, and information searches
  • Skills in selecting, cataloging, and maintaining library materials

Full Job Description

Under general supervision, is responsible for the application of the full scope of basic professional library needs of adults and/or children; selecting library materials; applying bibliographic control techniques to library materials; advising the public in their use of library materials; and handling reference and information search requests. Working conditions are primarily in an office environment. May exercise functional supervision over assigned staff.

Work Location
McCreless Branch Library - 1023 Ada Street, San Antonio, TX (78223) or any one of 28 Library branches.

Work Hours

This position requires a flexible schedule, including availability for evenings, nights, and weekends.


Requirements

  • Assists the general public with information regarding library materials and equipment.
  • Participates in library committee work.
  • Maintains and selects library materials on the basis of established criteria and the needs of the users.
  • Promotes use of the library by the community.
  • Answers reference questions and performs readers' advisory services.
  • Prepares and presents programs regarding library services and materials to various age groups.
  • Maintains work records and prepares reports.
  • Analyzes, evaluates, and selects materials.
  • Prepares original cataloging copy for non-specialized materials.
  • Solves routine classification and cataloging problems.
  • Reconciles differences in bibliographic records.
  • Trains staff in policies, procedures, and operation of various automated systems.
  • Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required.

Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in Library Science, Library and Information Studies/Science or Information Studies/Science from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited university or obtain within six (6) months of hire.
  • No substitution for education allowed.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Passion for and desire to work with young adults (teenagers, aged 13-18 years) in a public library setting.
  • Optimistic and creative approach to problem solving.
  • Spanish language proficiency.
  • Ability to embrace the flexible and changing nature of young adults (teens, ages 13-18) technological and informational needs.
  • Familiarity with the developmental needs of young adults in order to provide the most appropriate resources and services.
  • Knowledge of literature for and by young adults in traditional and emerging formats.
  • Ability to maintain awareness of ongoing technological advances and how they can improve access to information for young adults.
  • Ability to create an environment that embraces the flexible and changing nature of young adults' entertainment, technological and informational needs.

Applicant Information

Unless otherwise stated, applicants are permitted to substitute two years of related full-time experience for one year of higher education or one year of related higher education for two years of experience in order to meet the minimum requirements of the job.

One year of full-time experience is defined as 30 or more hours worked per week for 12 months.

One year of higher education is defined as 30 credit hours completed at an accredited college or university.
