Key Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent education
  • For Legal Secretary 7: Two years of administrative support experience with PC use for correspondence and data entry, including one year at a 6-level equivalent
  • For Legal Secretary 8: Three years of administrative support experience with PC use, including one year in legal secretarial practices equivalent to Legal Secretary 7
  • For Legal Secretary 9: Four years of office experience in administrative support, including two years in legal secretarial practices equivalent to Legal Secretary 7 or one year equivalent to Legal Secretary 8
  • Knowledge of legal processes and procedural requirements for filing in Michigan administrative, federal, and circuit courts
  • Proficiency in formatting, proofreading legal documents, docketing, calendaring, and maintaining case files
  • Ability to attach cover letter, resume, and transcript (if applicable) to application

Full Job Description


his position provides legal support to the Assistant Attorneys General assigned to the Alcohol and Gambling Enforcement Division of the Department of Attorney General in East Lansing. Duties include general legal support including, but not limited to, formatting and proofreading memoranda, letters and legal pleadings, docketing/calendaring, maintaining/organizing case files, scheduling of meetings and court hearings, answering telephones and opening and closing case files in the department database. The position requires an understanding of the legal process and procedural requirements of filing/electronically filing in administrative, Federal and Circuit Courts in the State of Michigan. The secretary in this position cannot visit any state-licensed casino in Michigan or any casino owened or operated by entities affiliated with casinos licensed in Michigan.

Experience

Legal Secretary 7

Two years of administrative support experience where use of a personal computer to prepare correspondence, reports, charts, etc., or to enter/retrieve/update information is an essential part of the work, including one year equivalent to 6-level administrative support experience.

Legal Secretary E8

Three years of administrative support experience where use of a personal computer to prepare correspondence, reports, charts, etc., or to enter/retrieve/update information is an essential part of the work, including one year involving legal secretarial practices equivalent to a Legal Secretary 7.

Legal Secretary 9

Four years of office experience involving administrative support practices, including two years involving legal secretarial practices equivalent to a Legal Secretary 7 or one year equivalent to a Legal SecretaryE8.
