Job Description

Summary

This job involves supporting lawyers in a special team that prosecutes serious crimes like human trafficking, drug offenses, and identity fraud related to undocumented residents, through tasks such as preparing court documents, managing schedules, and organizing evidence.

A good fit would be someone who is highly organized, detail-oriented, and comfortable working independently in a fast-paced legal environment with a focus on accuracy and deadlines.

The role is temporary, funded by a grant until 2027, and may start at a trainee level.

Legal Assistant – Justice Division – SECURE Strike Force

The Justice Division of the Office of the Attorney General seeks a motivated, meticulous, and collaborative candidate to support attorneys and other staff as a Legal Assistant in the SECURE Strike Force Section.

The SECURE Strike Force Section focuses on prosecuting human trafficking, racketeering, drugs, guns, and identity fraud type crimes involving undocumented residents.

Legal Assistants perform a variety of legal secretarial and administrative duties such as preparing, formatting, proofing, and filing legal documents in state courts; scheduling trial calendars; collecting and organizing data and exhibits in connection with prosecution; preparing discovery; and providing other related support.

This position may be filled as a Legal Assistant I or II.

This is a contract position and funded through a grant that ends on September 30, 2027. Renewal of the grant is possible but not guaranteed.

Requirements

  • Type and prepare reports or other written materials from source documents, transcription, etc.
  • Prepare and/or process documents; review for accuracy and completeness; update information and/or evaluate against policy; compare elements for consistency or logical relationships, etc.
  • Edit written material for accuracy, format, and arrangement of material.
  • File documents with courts and assist in trial preparation.
  • Maintain calendars; schedule and coordinate appointments.
  • Write or draft correspondence, reports, documents and/or other written materials.
  • Take and relay messages, respond to requests for information; provide information or direct caller/visitor to appropriate individual.
  • Maintain and/or create files in an electronic case management system. Sort, label, file and retrieve documents, evidence, or other electronic materials.
  • Review incoming case files for missing or inaccurate information.
  • Prepare discovery including redaction and Bate Stamping.
  • Work closely with law enforcement and victim coordinators.
  • Compile data for legislative mandatory reporting.
  • Prepare subpoenas and other documents for law enforcement.
  • Coordinate witness support.
  • Support and back up other Division secretaries.
  • Cross-train staff on areas of expertise.
