Do you have experience in wage garnishment, collections, and filing court documents? The Office of State Debt Collection (as part of the Division of Finance) is seeking a Legal Secretary to collect payments from debtors to benefit the State of Utah and victims of criminal activity. Note: In addition to other types of debts, OSDC collects debts owed as a result of criminal behavior. This includes restitution, fines, sex offender registry fees, probation supervision fees, and others.

    Principal Duties
    As a Legal Secretary, you may:
    • Request and prepare wage garnishments on debtors.
    • Verify debtor employment information.
    • Review current garnishments to ensure the debtor's employer is complying.
    • Research and prepare legal documents.
    • Communicate with state courts regarding hearings and legal questions.
    • Answer incoming phone calls from debtors and employers.
    • Process incoming mail by scanning and noting the appropriate accounts.
    • Send legal documents to process server to be served.
    • Negotiate payment agreements with debtors.
    • Research public records using state court and other government databases.
    • Other tasks as assigned by the attorney or management.

    Minimum Qualifications
    The best qualified candidate will have:
    • 2 or more years of experience preparing and filing documents with the court.
    • 2 or more years of experience in collections, especially for a legal office dedicated to debt collection.
    Additional preference may be given to applicants who are or have:
    • Certified court interpreters.

    The mission of the Office of State Debt Collection (OSDC) is to maximize receipt of money to the State of Utah by effectively managing and collecting state receivables.

    Additional Information

    Working Conditions:
    Risks found in the typical office setting, which is adequately lighted, heated and ventilated, e.g., safe use of office equipment, avoiding trips and falls, observing fire regulations, etc.

    Physical Requirements:
    Typically, the employee may sit comfortably to perform the work; however, there may be some walking; standing; bending; carrying light items; driving an automobile, etc. Special physical demands are not required to perform the work.
