The Montana VA Health Care System is hiring a Lead Medical Supply Technician at the Benjamin Charles Steele VA Clinic.
This role supports the Sterile Processing Service (SPS) management team by assisting with staff orientation, training, and proper use of the tracking system to ensure efficient, accurate, and professional supply of sterile instruments.
Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
Basic Requirements: Citizenship: Be a citizen of the United States.
(Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3g this part) English Language Proficiency: Candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English to be appointed as authorized by 38 U.S.C.
§ 7403(f). Experience and/or Education: Experience. Six months of experience that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work or provides an understanding of the work; or Education.
One year above high school that included at least 6 semester hours in health care related courses such as sterile processing, nursing assistant, hospital corpsman, and operating room and surgical technician courses or other courses related to the position; or Experience/Education Combination.
Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable. Certification: None.
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).
Grade Determinations: GS-7 Lead Medical Supply Technician (Sterile Processing) Experience. One year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level.
Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities.
In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs: Ability to instruct staff on the correct procedures and protocols for completing assignments.
Skill in communicating with staff to ensure compliance with written directives, rules and regulations. Skill in interpersonal relationships in dealing with employees, team leaders, and managers.
Knowledge of sterility principles in order to instruct staff on decontamination procedures. Ability to lead individuals, manage priorities, and schedule work assignments.
Preferred Experience: Level 1 VHA SPS Certification or other equivalent nationally accredited certification.

Physical Requirements: This work is performed in various settings: decontamination, preparation, clean sterile supply (preparation), and in other services and departments throughout the medical facility/campus.
The incumbent may be required to work in areas that are hot, cold, drafty and poorly lighted.
The employee is subject to the possibility of falls, scrapes, cuts, bruises, and other injuries from material handling equipment.
The work requires standing and walking during the entire workday and frequent bending and lifting of packages (occasionally weighing as much as 50 pounds).
The work requires dexterity and visual acuity for manipulating, disassembly and assembly of instrumentation. Major Duties:
Total Rewards of a Allied Health Professional The Lead position supports the SPS management team by distributing and prioritizing the workload among GS-0622-3/4/5/6 Medical Supply Technicians according to established workflows and specializations.
The Lead oversees all departmental activities during their shift, including receiving, decontaminating, assembling, sterilizing instruments and trays, and building case carts.
Major duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to: Serve as a subject matter expert for staff, guiding them through proper procedures.
Monitor and report on work status, progress, adherence to policies, and work quality. Review work in progress and conduct spot checks to ensure work meets facility demands and quality standards.
Assesses the quality and quantity of work by reviewing the cleaning, reprocessing, and distribution of technical medical equipment, material and instrumentation.
Provide management with performance information, assignment changes, and task completion updates. Address special and emergent requirements in consultation with medical/surgical staff.
Generate monthly sterilization and biological reports for SPS leadership; conduct and report SPAT data as requested by VISN.
Advise medical personnel on the proper use of sterile equipment and problem resolution.
Maintain records of work accomplishments, prepare production reports, and instruct employees on tasks and job techniques.
Provide on-the-job training to new employees, maintaining current knowledge and addressing procedure-related questions.
Monitor workplace conditions, inform employees of available services and activities, and resolve simple complaints, referring complex issues to the supervisor.
Report on employee performance, progress, training needs, behavior problems, and assist in completing competencies for MSTs. Compile testing and reports for supervisor assessments.
Ensure SOPs, IFUs, and SPS mandates are followed during workflow. Maintain Level 2 VHA SPS Certification or other nationally accredited certification is expected.
Demonstrate advanced knowledge of processes for Reusable Medical Devices (RMD) and maintain current SOP knowledge for cleaning, disinfection, sterilization, and preparation of RMD.
