Summary

This job involves leading the maintenance and repair of vehicles, including gasoline, diesel, and electric models, at the Smithsonian Institution's facilities in Maryland.

You'll handle everything from fixing mechanical and electrical systems to managing inventory and advising on parts and vendor costs.

Key Requirements

  • One year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-XX level in installing, inspecting, repairing, and testing mobile assets like gasoline/diesel vehicles and electric vehicles
  • Ability to install, repair, overhaul, rebuild, modify, test, program, and troubleshoot integrated mechanical and electrical systems (e.g., AC systems, EV motors, diagnostic equipment)
  • Experience assisting with fleet management tasks, including inventories, surplus disposal, resolving discrepancies, and maintaining automated tracking systems
  • Skills in advising on shop stock needs, service parts, supplies, and performing cost-effective vendor analysis
  • Ability to analyze, evaluate, and report on complex mechanical and electrical systems operations
  • Master's degree or equivalent graduate education related to the position, or a combination of education and experience

The Smithsonian Institution is the world’s largest museum, education, and research complex, with 21 museums and the National Zoo.

This position is located in Smithsonian Institution’s Office of Smithsonian Facilities (SF), Office of Facilities Management and Reliability (OFMR).

The Office of Facilities Management and Reliability provides the full range of building services through maintenance and operational zones.

Experience: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-XX level in the Federal Service.

For this position, specialized experience is defined as installing, inspecting, repairing, and diagnostic testing to Mobile Asset Repair Equipment such as gasoline/diesel assets and EV-Electrical Vehicles.

Major Duties:

The Lead Engineering Technician (Vehicles) is responsible for installing, repairing, overhauling, rebuilding, modifying, testing and troubleshooting integrated mechanical and electrical systems.

In this position, you will: Install, repair, overhaul, rebuild, modify, test, program, and troubleshoot major integrated mechanical and electrical systems such as Fleet wave Automotive System, Diagnostic Equipment, AC/Air conditioning, EV Electric Motor Repair, etc.

Assist Agency Fleet Manager and Mobile Asset Supervisor with activities related to conducting regularly scheduled inventories, disposal of surplus, resolving discrepancies, maintaining automated tracking systems and interacting with accountable property professionals.

Advise the supervisor of shop stock needs, services parts, and supplies. Perform analysis to ensure cost effective utilization when dealing with vendors.

Analyze, evaluate, and report on complex mechanical and electrical systems operations.
