Job Description

Summary

This role involves leading a small team of accounting technicians at the Defense Finance and Accounting Service, where you'll oversee daily financial tasks like balancing accounts, verifying transactions, and resolving discrepancies in payment systems.

It's a hands-on position that requires strong attention to detail and the ability to guide others while ensuring accurate financial records for the Department of Defense.

A good fit would be someone with a couple of years of federal accounting experience who enjoys problem-solving and working in a structured team environment.

Key Requirements

  • One year of specialized experience at GS-06 level or equivalent, including maintaining financial ledgers, posting transactions, preparing reports, reconciling accounts, and using automated financial systems
  • 52 weeks of time-in-grade at GS-06 or higher in federal service, with SF-50 effective date meeting the requirement within 30 days of announcement closing
  • Ability to serve as work leader, distributing and balancing workload among team members and making adjustments to ensure tasks are completed
  • Skills in evaluating and reconciling account balances, such as in the Third Party Payment System (TPPS), and researching abnormal discrepancies
  • Proficiency in verifying documents for accounting accuracy, completeness, and determining processing actions for various transactions
  • Experience responding to customer inquiries on accounting data issues and coordinating with budget personnel to resolve non-liquidated balances
  • Ability to review and process unusual or difficult accounting transactions, ensuring validity of documentation and appropriate methodology

One year of specialized experience equivalent in level of difficulty and responsibility to that of the next lower grade (GS-06) within the federal service, which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position, is required.

Specialized experience is defined as: Maintaining accounting or financial ledgers, posting financial transactions, preparing financial reports, reconciling accounts and working with a variety of accounting and automated financial management systems.

Time-in-Grade: Current or former federal employees who have held a GS position in the preceding 52 weeks, must meet the time in grade requirement.

Applicant must have served 52 weeks as a GS-06 or higher grade in Federal Service.

** The effective date of your SF-50 must reflect that you will meet the 52-week time in grade requirement within 30 days of the announcement closing.

Major Duties:

  • Serves as Work Leader by identifying, distributing, and balancing workload and tasks to team members in accordance with established workflow, and assures accomplishment of the assigned workload. Makes adjustments as needed to get the work done.
  • Evaluates Third Party Payment System (TPPS) account balances; analyzes subsidiary ledgers for accuracy and integrity of data; performs research to reconcile abnormal account balances (e.g., “credit” balances in “debit” accounts and vice versa).
  • Verifies documents for accuracy and completeness of accounting data, mathematical accuracy and determines necessary processing actions for a wide variety of accounting transactions.
  • Responds to questions from customers or other technicians regarding accounting data discrepancies. Coordinates with budget personnel regarding Installation level actions required to identify, track, research and liquidate any non-liquidated balances.
  • Reviews and processes unusual or difficult accounting transactions ensuring the propriety and validity of supporting documentation and determines appropriate account and methodology for processing.
