Full Job Description

The duties of the Laundry Worker may involve receiving, sorting, and marking soiled linen and apparel; processing flatwork/roughdry items; assembling/issuing clean laundry.

This includes classifying/marking, shaking out wet laundry; catching, folding, and stacking ironed flatwork; folding roughdry laundry; sorting by identification number; and wrapping bundles.

Laundry jobs involve skills of loading unloading, and operating washers, extractors, and tumblers, or pressing shirts and garments.

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position.

Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire.

Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated.

Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.

Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Major Duties:

Major duties include, but are not limited to: Incumbent removes sheets, bedspreads and other items from containers and place sends on clips of spreader feeder for the flatwork ironer, holding items taut as the leading-edge feeds into the pressure roll.

At times these or smaller items must be fed directly into the ironer. Receives, stacks and places the correct number of items from the cross folder onto the conveyor or containers.

Also, receives small flat partially folded items which he/she stacks and places in proper containers or on conveyor.

Incumbent folds rough dry items such as bath towels, pajamas, convalescent clothing, cotton blankets, laundry bags, etc., and stacks like items for placing on laundry stock shelves.

Incumbent receives soiled government-owned bulk laundry in laundry bags in carts.

He/she sorts the laundry by type of fabric or linen such as sheets, into one group, washcloths and bath towels in another, pajamas and robes in another, and so on.

Operates the cart dump, scales, cart washer, soiled linen conveyor and monorail system. Incumbent receives soiled personal wearing apparel in bulk from buildings and other medical centers.

Classifies and sorts the various items into different lots according to cleaning formula used and the finishing process to be used.

Places clothing on hangers for processing through the steam finishing cabinet. Incumbent keeps employees' uniforms separated and designates which facility they are to be returned to.

Incumbent removes clean finished linen from the conveyor system and places on the flow rack or in carts based on type, kind, and amount. Incumbent performs other related duties as assigned.

Work Schedule: Monday-Friday; 1:00 PM - 9:30 PM Position Description Title/PD#: Laundry Worker/PD01425A Physical Requirements: The nature of the work requires standing for long periods of time; reaching, stretching, and lifting on a regular basis.

Good reflexes and hand eye coordination are required for safe handling of carts in congested areas.

Incumbent will be required to move heavily loaded carts by pushing or pulling on flat surfaces as well as gradual inclines.

Soiled linen bags may weigh up to 75 pound, and incumbent should seek assistance in lifting bags weighing over 50 pounds.

Incumbent will wear personal protective equipment provided to minimize the change of injury; following safety procedures as taught for the handling of heavy Items.

Good eyesight and good field of vision is important with or without glasses to safely move carts weighing hundreds of pounds, standing over 5 feet tall and 5 feet long.

Incumbent is alert at all times to avoid unsafe acts and prevent injuries to employees and/or visitors & patients.
