Full Job Description

The position is located in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Veterans Health Administration (VHA), Mid-Atlantic Health Care Network (VISN 6), Salem VA Medical Center, Facility Management Service, Laundry Section, Salem, Virginia.

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 03/09/2026 EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position.

Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume.

Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

Must possess ability and skills to sort linen by classification and customer, correctly identifying personal clothing, and maintaining accurate counts; separates soiled textiles into appropriate categories; properly handles soiled and infectious linen; separates, folds, ties, stacks rough dry textiles using power equipment; processes flatwork and/or finishing equipment; and operates tunnel finisher and auto-valet uniform dispensing equipment; maintains a neat, clean, organized work area to ensure productivity and efficiency; and performs routine cleaning assignments within the Laundry.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire.

Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated.

The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements: Reliability and Dependability Operation of Equipment/Machinery Work Practices Technical Practices Interpret Instructions, Specifications (other than blueprint reading) Knowledge of Materials.

Materials Special Aptitude Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social).

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week.

Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.

Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirement. Subject to continuous walking, stretching, stooping, lifting, pulling, pushing, all of which are repetitive-type tasks.

May be required to frequently lift bundles weighing up to 25 pounds and, on occasions, lift bundles weighing over 50 pounds. Working Conditions.

Subject to continual dampness, high humidity, excessive heat and noise. Must stand and walk on concrete floors, which on many occasions are either damp or wet. Major Duties:

The primary duties of the position involves receiving, sorting, and marking soiled linen and apparel; processing flatwork and roughdry items; assembling and issuing clean laundry.

This includes classifying and marking; shaking out wet laundry' feeding into the flatwork ironer; catching, folding, and stacking ironed flatwork; folding roughdry laundry; sorting by identification number; and wrapping bundles.

Position receives, sorts and classifies all soiled linens including patient clothing and uniforms; classifies laundry such as rough-dry, flatwork, prints, etc., in order to process each item in its proper classification; weighs and properly records weight under the designated heading; moves soiled linen into the washroom; assists in operating the continuous wash extract system.

Responsible for the daily cleaning of equipment and housekeeping functions in the Laundry Plant which includes the cleaning of machines, flooding of walls and floor space.

Position rotates through other areas of the Laundry, including Linen Distribution, along with assignments to pick up and deliver linens.

Responsible for processing all types of garments including uniforms, shirts, trousers, related garments, along-with draperies, tablecloths and various miscellaneous items.

Responsible for ensuring that all finished items meet the accepted quality standards.

Torn and/or stained uniforms should be brought to the attention of the Laundry Foreman and /or placed in a designated rewash or salvage location.

Prepares items to run through the upright ironer system and insure uniforms are placed on the proper distribution containers such as baskets, racks, etc.

Responsible for reassembling by name and/or number of individually owned and/or government issue uniforms, shaking out and folding rough dry items, feeding spreader and/or folding to and from flatwork ironer and small piece folder.

Prepares operating room linen and surgical scrub items. Checks and assembles linens for ward and clinic use as requested by VA Form for Laundry List or when received by phone.

Ensures that each request is properly noted as it is filled and placed in the transporting vehicle.

In the case of a phone-in request, the position initiates laundry list, checks requisitions against the linen quotas.

Responsible for ensuring that all records are adequately maintained since they become a part of the laundry production report. Performs other directly related duties as assigned.
