This job involves handling clean and soiled linens in a hospital laundry unit, including loading and unloading deliveries, sorting items, and operating basic equipment to keep up with daily production needs.
It's a hands-on role in a busy, noisy environment where you'll lift heavy loads and follow safety rules to avoid injuries.
A good fit would be someone reliable and physically fit who doesn't mind repetitive work and has basic experience in manual labor or warehouse tasks.
These positions are located within the Textile Care Unit, Environmental Management Service at the VA Long Beach Healthcare System, Long Beach, CA.
Incumbent will receive clean linen from the VISN Textile Care facility and assist with the loading and off-loading of clean and soiled linens to and from the linen delivery trailer.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position.

Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.
SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire.
Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated.
The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements: Dexterity and Safety Interpret Instructions, Specifications (other than blueprint reading) Materials Operation of Equipment/Machinery Without more than normal supervision Work Practices Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social).
Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week.
Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.
PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: Workers must be able to stand or walk continuously on concrete floors and will need a certain amount of quickness in hand and arm movements to keep up with the established production standards.
Laundries can be extremely noisy and usually hot and humid, and workers are exposed to the possibility of bruises from carts or machinery.
If required to sort laundry, workers wear protective masks, gloves and gowns. Work requires considerable lifting, carrying and relocating of linens weighing as much as 20-70 lbs.
Items such as chairs, desks, file cabinets, boxes and some laundry detergents may require dollies to move.
Heavier items than 8 kilograms (40 lbs) are moved with appropriate weight handling equipment or with assistance from other workers.
Assistance with moving heavy equipment and linen throughout the Medical Center will require assistance in movement of such linen and equipment due to weight, size and other conditions as required by the assignment.
Assignments will be performed under all weather conditions. An applicant is continually on the alert to avoid injuries form hand or powered tools.
Applicants may be exposed to eye and skin injury from flying debris and will be required to wear protective gear to reduce the risk of injury.
In addition, the applicant will be required to wear ear plugs, safety glasses, protective gloves, masks and back braces when needed.
Assignments will require work being completed in high noise levels and can involve some contact with adhesives that may be related to moves.
Work will require protective clothing such as hardhats, steel-toed shoes, rubber gloves, masks and rubber aprons. Major Duties:
Duties include but are not limited: Performing such tasks as sorting, classifying, and weighing soiled linen; folding, counting, bundling, and stacking rough dry linen and special items.
Feeding linen into the flatwork ironer; receiving, counting and stacking ironed linen; and filling racks, baskets, or carts with clean linen items.
Unloading washed linen items from washer-extractor machines and transports washed linens either to the flatwork ironer or to the driers using a hoist and overhead monorail system.
Loading and unloading driers utilizing overhead monorail and carts. Items such as washed clothes and pajamas will be paired, folded, counted and stacked.
Textile items such as linen bags and fitted bed sheets will be collected and consolidated into set quantities.
Other piecework involving cutting rags and processing pillowcases, dish towels, and pack towels. Individual carts or baskets will be covered to prevent contamination in transit.
Carts will be tagged for proper destination. Charts will be loaded onto trailers or truck (in a prescribed manner to conserve space) for a specified destination.
Will be loading laundry carts to transport both clean and soiled laundry to/from various location on campus.
Will be laundering specialty items; such as slings, cubicle curtains, bags, uniforms, scrubs, patient gowns, and tablecloths separately for each facility.
May work in various areas of the laundry plant doing different job tasks as required, which may include, sorting soiled linens, hand folding clean linens, running clean linens on a flatwork ironer, small piece folder, blanket folder, delivery of linens to patient areas and other duties as assigned.
