Career OpportunityThe city of Las Vegas invites applicants for Land Survey Technician.
This position performs a variety of responsible and complex technical field survey work in support of city activities; works independently or as a member of a survey crew; and provides assistance to professional and technical level survey staff.
The purpose of this recruitment is to establish an eligible list for current and/ or future openings city-wide, which may include part-time or full-time positions.
Distinguishing Characteristics
Land Survey Technician is a full journey level classification.
Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise, and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit.
Field survey work is often performed independently and without direct supervision.
This class is distinguished from the Land Survey Crew Leader by the latter's oversight and more complex technical responsibilities.
Supervision Received
Receives general, functional and technical supervision from the Assistant City Surveyor and department senior management.
Type of ExaminationA civil service examination will be conducted in accordance with the Civil Service Rules of the city of Las Vegas. The supplemental questions are the examination. Falsification of information may result in disqualification from a recruitment or removal from a city position. Additional information will not be accepted after the closing date. The supplemental questions are weighted 100% for placement on an eligible list, and must be worked on individually by the applicant only. The supplemental questions of all qualified applicants will be reviewed for placement on an eligible list. The eligible list will remain in effect for a period of 6 months from the date of certification and may be extended for a period of up to 2 years.
Eligible ListYou must score 70% or higher on t
he examination to be placed on the eligible list. The eligible list will remain in effect for a period of 6 months from the date of certification and may be extended for a period of up to 2 years.Selection ProcessFinal candidate selection will include list placement and may include hiring interview (if applicable). Any individual offered employment will be required to pass a pre-employment drug test, complete background check, and may be required to demonstrate the ability to perform the physical requirements of the job. Some positions may require preliminary background checks.
Requirements
Essential Functions:- Works independently or as a member of a field survey crew.
- Determines the most appropriate method to conduct specific surveys; ensures that surveys are in compliance with applicable laws, codes and regulations.
- Operates a variety of survey equipment.
- Monitors and maintains appropriate levels of supplies, equipment, and inventory to ensure efficient and effective operations; loads and unloads the vehicle with survey equipment each day.
- Sets up traffic safety and control devices at the work site to ensure the safety of the crew.
- Sets stakes, monuments benchmarks and other markers, using hand and power tools.
- Makes field drawings, measurements and calculations by setting up, adjusting and operating a variety of survey instruments to perform preliminary, control, monument, construction, topographic and related surveys.
- Maintains detailed, accurate, orderly and legible field notes and records of survey work performed.
- Enters field data into a data collection system.
- Performs necessary calculations to facilitate construction surveys of approved engineering drawings.
- Reads and interprets land surveying maps to locate survey points; investigates, locates, identifies and advises or recommends the acceptability of found survey monumentation.
Marginal Functions:- Operates and secures assigned vehicle and other assigned equipment; determines whether vehicle is in good working order; maintains vehicle in clean and fueled condition.

Qualifications
Experience
Two years of increasingly responsible technical surveying experience.
Training
Associate's degree from an accredited college or university with major in surveying or a field related to the essential functions.
A combination of formal education and directly related work experience may substitute for the degree.
The city assesses 1.5 years of fulltime experience as equivalent to one year of education.Licenses and Certifications
Possession of an appropriate, valid driver's license on the date of application, and maintenance thereafter.Possession of Survey Technician Certification, Level II (field track), from the National Society of Professional Surveyors, is desirable.
As a condition of continued employment, employees must acquire the following certification(s) by the date specified:
Possession of a Work Zone Safety certification from the International Municipal signal association within one year of the date of appointment, and maintenance thereafter.
