DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The Houston Parks and Recreation Department is dedicated to building a sustainable community and enhancing the quality of urban life by providing safe well-maintained parks and offering affordable programming for our community. To achieve this mission, HPARD is seeking a Laborer (Seasonal) to join its Greenspace Maintenance team.

The potential candidate will play a key role in the following duties:
  • Maintain park grounds by picking up litter, debris, de-weed flowerbeds, and water trees.
  • Performs basic cleaning of park facilities, some custodial duties, and monitors supplies in restrooms.
  • May operate small lawn and garden power tools such as: backpack blowers, string trimmers, and stick edgers.
  • Maintain the Nature Center exhibits, clean fish tanks and snake cages.
  • Report any problems or hazardous conditions that will prevent a safe environment to the public.
  • Perform additional assignments as required.
  • Candidates will be responsible for their own safety shoes.

WORKING CONDITIONS
There are routine exposures to moderate heat, cold, moisture/wetness, and unpleasant air conditions. The position may involve routine exposure to soiled materials and light chemical substances such as cleaning solutions.

Requirements

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Very fundamental levels of ability to read, write and follow simple oral instructions as might normally be acquired through up to 8 years of formal schooling.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
No experience is required.
LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
May require a valid Texas Class C driver's license and compliance with the City of Houston's policy on driving (AP 2-2).

Qualifications

PREFERENCE
Applicants who can work Day, Evening, Night, Weekend, and Holiday shifts. Also, preference will be given to those applicants that have experience in grounds maintenance and applicants who have a valid Texas Class C driver's license.

**Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.**
