Full Job Description
The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) is seeking a skilled Journey Heating and Air Conditioning Specialist to support our Region Four facilities. This position is based at the UDOT Price District Office and will primarily maintain facilities in the eastern portion of southern Utah, with regular travel throughout the region.
Principal DutiesThis position performs the following duties:
- Operates and maintains low-pressure steam, hot water, and glycol boilers.
- Installs, inspects, troubleshoots, and repairs HVAC systems, equipment, and controls.
- Performs preventive and corrective maintenance on heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems.
- Diagnoses system malfunctions and makes necessary adjustments or repairs to ensure safe and efficient operation.
- Evacuates, charges, and recovers refrigerants in compliance with environmental and safety regulations.
- Uses and maintains a variety of hand tools, electrical, mechanical, and automotive equipment.
- Trains and mentors staff on HVAC principles, equipment operation, and safety standards.
- Develops and prepares training materials, instructional aids, and documentation.
- Coordinates maintenance activities to support operational and institutional needs.
- Works collaboratively with maintenance and service teams to ensure timely and effective system performance.
The Qualified Candidate Will Have:- Three or more years of HVAC or related experience.
- Strong knowledge of HVAC system operation and maintenance.
- Ability to install, repair, and maintain electrical systems.
- Working knowledge of welding methods and techniques.
- Practical understanding of plumbing methods and practices.
- Ability to travel within the Region Four area.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Strong communication and customer service skills.
- Ability to work independently and in a team.
Preferred Qualifications- Five or more years of HVAC or related experience.
- Technical certificate or associate degree in HVAC, mechanical systems, or related field.
- Additional related certifications (e.g., EPA 608, NATE, OSHA, Universal Refrigerant).
- Experience with building automation systems or maintenance software (CMMS).
- Experience in public-sector or large-facility environments.
- Supervisory or mentoring experience.
- Knowledge of energy efficiency and sustainability practices.
