Job Description
Summary
This role involves overseeing the daily activities and safety of at-risk youth in a 24-hour juvenile justice facility, managing the control room to monitor everyone on site, and supervising staff who work with the young people.
It also includes providing guidance, teaching positive skills, and handling crises to help youth build better behaviors and prepare for life outside the facility.
A good fit would be someone with experience in youth mentoring or security, who is patient, communicative, and committed to supporting troubled teens in a structured environment.
Key Requirements
- Experience in supervising staff, including training, scheduling, hiring, and performance evaluation
- Knowledge of security and control techniques to maintain safety in a youth facility
- Ability to provide crisis intervention and pass the Integrated Crisis Response (ICR) program within 90 days
- Skills in teaching pro-social, academic, and vocational skills to youth
- Strong communication abilities, both verbal and written, for counseling and record-keeping

Lead Youth Development Specialist/Control Supervisor
The JJYS Control Supervisor coordinates and schedules activities of residents within the 24 hour JJS facility. The JJYS Control Supervisor shall provide constant supervision of all individual and group activities for at-risk youth, while being cognizant of where all youth are and what they are doing. The JJYS Control Supervisor oversees the daily operations of the "Control Room" which ensures the safety and security of the youth, employees, volunteers and the public. A JJYS Control Supervisor supervises JJYS Technicians, which includes: monitoring their work, providing training, scheduling, hiring staff and evaluating performance plans.

Roles and Responsibilities
- Uses security and control techniques to secure people, facilities, property, supplies or equipment
- Ensures compliance with applicable federal and/or state laws, regulations, and agency rules
- Maintains records and logs
- Provides crisis intervention when necessary
- Receives calls and/or greets visitors, takes and relays messages, responds to
- Assist with teaching a variety of pro-social, academic and vocational skills.
- Provide counseling to youth both individually and in groups surrounding program/facility rules, regulations and guidelines.
- Assist in the preservation of safety and security by performing facility searches and, when required by policy, youth searches.
- Help and encourage youths to behave positively by assessing and evaluating them using a behavior management/reward system.
- Mentor youth within a group setting and help them develop positive plans and goals.
- Pass the Integrated Crisis Response (ICR) intervention program within 90 days of employment.
- Speaks clearly, concisely and effectively; listen to, and understand, information and ideas as presented verbally
- Communicates information and ideas clearly, and concisely, in writing; read an understand information presented in writing
The Ideal Candidate has
Preference may be given to candidates 21 years of age and a high school diploma or GED.
Six years of paid working experience with troubled or at-risk youth; six years of full-time education or a combination of education and experience to equal six years.
Qualifying work experience: Paid work at any JJYS facility, Utah State Hospital, Utah State Developmental Center, private residential youth programs, alternative schools, juvenile probation/ parole, Law enforcement, or programs that work with at-risk or delinquent youths.
Non-qualifying work experience: Volunteer work with youth and unpaid experience

- High risks in this job include physical intervention with clients in order to de-escalate hostile or volatile situations.
