Job Description

Summary

This job involves managing and maintaining IT systems and networks for the Military Sealift Command, ensuring they run smoothly on ships and other operations.

You'll plan, install, troubleshoot, and support hardware, software, and cybersecurity to keep everything operational.

It's a good fit for someone with hands-on IT experience who enjoys solving technical problems and working with teams in a military environment.

Key Requirements

  • One year of IT-related experience demonstrating attention to detail, such as overseeing program design, coding, and debugging
  • One year of IT-related experience in customer service, including assessing needs, providing assistance, and resolving issues
  • One year of IT-related experience in oral communication, such as relaying instructions and presenting in meetings
  • One year of IT-related experience in problem solving, including analyzing issues and improving procedures
  • One year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-9 level in computer network and IT systems life cycle planning, management, operations, and sustainment
  • Knowledge of IT hardware and software concepts to maintain shipboard networks and systems
  • Experience in installation, maintenance, and resolving software/network integration problems

I have one year of information technology related experience in the federal service or private or public sector demonstrating the following four competencies, as defined: 1.

Attention to Detail - Is thorough when performing work and conscientious about attending to detail.

IT-related experience demonstrating this competency include: overseeing the implementation of programming specifications by monitoring program design, coding and debugging performed by contractors. 2.

Customer Service - Works with clients and customers (that is, any individuals who use or receive the services or products that your work unit produces, including the general public, individuals who work in the agency, other agencies, or organizations outside the Government) to assess their needs, provide information or assistance, resolve their problems, or satisfy their expectations; knows about available products and services; is committed to providing quality products and services.

IT-related experience demonstrating this competency include: determining customer requirements and assisting customers by recognizing and analyzing trends by providing instruction and orientation. 3.

Oral Communication - Expresses information (for example, ideas or facts) to individuals or groups effectively, taking into account the audience and nature of the information (for example, technical, sensitive, controversial); makes clear and convincing oral presentations; listens to others, attends to nonverbal cues, and responds appropriately.

IT-related experience demonstrating this competency include: contacting customers at the Help Desk Level that may include those who are skeptical or uncooperative, skilled in communication to relay instructions and represent the team in meetings within the organization.

4. Problem Solving - Identifies problems; determines accuracy and relevance of information; uses sound judgment to generate and evaluate alternatives, and to make recommendations.

IT-related experience demonstrating this competency include: analyzing the types, frequency and solutions necessary to correct problems and improve help desk operational procedures.

In addition to my experience demonstrating the four competencies above, I have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-11) or pay band in the federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector: Experience with computer network and IT systems life cycle planning, management, operations and sustainment.

Experience with IT hardware and software concepts, principles and practices sufficient to ensure shipboard networks and IT systems remain operational.

Experience with the effectiveness of current technical and support services, such as hardware, software, solutions and Cybersecurity activities.

Experience executing installation, maintenance and sustainment activities for new and existing computer network and IT systems.

Experience with systems life cycle management concepts used to plan, develop, implement, operate and maintain IT systems.

Experience identifying and resolving significant software and network integration problems and developing solutions for implementation of integrated computer systems.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. Major Duties:

  • You will provide technical reviews of design specifications for shipboard computer networks and systems aboard MSC ships.
  • You will manage multiple projects designed to support the PM2 mission.
  • You will review shipboard inventories to identify equipment for reutilization, relocation, and/or return to vendor or salvage.
  • You will coordinate innovative, unusual and/or routine shipboard IT system installation, maintenance and sustainment activities.
  • You will provide customer service support to resolve deployment, maintenance and sustainment problems with shipboard IT systems.
  • You will provide direct oversight of shipboard IT systems ensuring system compliance with applicable laws, regulations, policies, standards and procedures.
  • Yow will direct oversight and support to MSC ships is required and ranges from minor repairs to major overhauls requiring extended industrial assistance.
  • You will research, develop, evaluate effectiveness and technical adequacy of work items and proposals for resolving complicated and critical IT problems.
  • You will support cyber security and compliance reviews during shipboard network inspections
  • You will develop and implement processes and procedures to improve reliability and supportability of IT systems/equipment
