Summary

This job involves working as an IT cybersecurity specialist for the Department of Defense, focusing on evaluating and strengthening cyber defenses to protect military information systems from threats.

Key Requirements

  • IT-related experience demonstrating competencies in attention to detail, customer service, oral communication, and problem solving

  • For GG-13 level: At least one year of experience leading complex cybersecurity assessments, developing/implementing security policies, providing advice on cybersecurity architecture, or conducting risk analyses for information systems
  • Ability to review IT work for accuracy, completeness, and consistency with standards
  • Experience maintaining customer relationships and tailoring IT products/services to meet needs
  • Skill in briefing management and staff on IT systems/projects, including explaining technical info to non-experts
  • Proficiency in identifying alternatives to solve complex IT-related issues using various information sources

Full Job Description

This position is being recruited under 10 USC 1599f into the Cyber Excepted Service and does NOT convey eligibility to be converted to the Competitive Service.

It has been identified as a position necessary to carry out and support the mission of the US Cyber Command. It is in the Professional Work Category within the CES Occupational Structure.

It is located in the Cyberspace Resilience Evaluation Directorate (CRED) J10, DoD Cyber Defense Command (DCDC).

Applicants must have IT-related experience demonstrating the following competencies appropriate to, or above, the level of this position.

For vacancies below the full-performance level of the position, the basic requirement will be evaluated on a developmental basis.

Oral Communication -briefing mid-level management and IT staff on the status of information technology systems, projects, or daily operations, including the communication of technical information to a non-technical audience.

Problem Solving - identifying alternatives to address complex information technology-related issues by gathering and applying information from a variety of sources that provide a number of potential solutions.

AND Qualifying Experience: GG-12 In addition to meeting the basic requirement, applicants must possess qualifying experience.

To qualify at the GG-12 level, your resume must describe at least one year of experience that demonstrates the competencies necessary for immediate success in the position.

Experience refers to any paid or unpaid experience, including volunteer work and Military service, that would be considered equivalent to work normally performed at the next lower grade level in the federal service.

For this position, qualifying experience is defined as experience in conducting cybersecurity vulnerability assessments; OR providing technical support and guidance on IT security issues; OR assisting in the development of security procedures to prevent unauthorized access; OR applying security principles to analyze information systems under general supervision.

Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual, community, student, social).

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates to paid employment.

  • Leads cybersecurity assessments, vulnerability assessments, and CORA Cybersecurity Readiness evaluations. Defines objectives, identifies vulnerabilities, and articulates mission risks to enhance security and readiness.
  • Provides technical support and guidance on IT issues, the CORA framework, and network architectures. Ensures the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of systems, networks, and data by advising staff on security matters.
  • Develop policies and procedures to ensure system reliability and accessibility. Promotes security awareness and ensures security principles are reflected in organizational goals.
  • Serves as a leader in the Reviewer Certification Program by developing training materials, mentoring junior assessors, and leading the certification of new assessment personnel.
  • Conducts detailed technical analysis across a broad range of areas. Develop recommendations and presents reports to management on the organization's security posture.
