Full Job Description

This employee is to operate SCDNR- MRD research vessels, ranging from 50 to 110 feet in length, while conducting scientific research cruises in inland, coastal, and offshore waters of South Carolina and the Atlantic Ocean from Cape Hatteras to Cape Canaveral.

Job Duties Include:
  • Piloting, navigating and operating research vessels to support education and scientific research.
  • Maintaining R/V Lady Lillian or helping to maintain the vessel assigned, and all Department-issued equipment.
  • Performing routine preventative maintenance (pm) on main diesel and generator engines, generator, hydraulics, electronics, deck gear, rigging and all State-issued vessel equipment.
  • Assisting in preparing annual pm program and developing spec sheets for annual yard period.
  • Acting as back-up Captain and assisting with maintenance on other research vessels as required.
  • Maintaining vessel safety program.
  • Maintaining complete bridge and engineering logs.
  • Identifying and writing specifications for purchases as necessary or directed by supervisor and updating vessel inventory when necessary.
  • Ensuring compliance with Department and Division policies at all times.
  • Performing other duties as assigned by the supervisor to include but not limited to maintaining property and equipment on campus that is utilized by vessel operations or assisting other sections, i.e. the Physical Plant as needed.
  • Meeting vessel scheduled departure times.

Requirements

A high school diploma and four (4) years of experience in the operation of a commercial fishing vessel, military or large private marine vessel.

A 100-ton Masters (Captain's) License and all associated certifications (i.e. first aid, CPR/AED, random drug testing program, etc.)

Qualifications

Ability to demonstrate the ability to pilot and navigate a large (up to 100 tons) ocean going vessel. Knowledge of lifesaving, safety and fire fighting procedures, engine maintenance, electrical, hydraulic, navigation, communication systems; commercial fishing or scientific sampling techniques, operation and maintenance of electronic navigation and communication equipment. Ability to lift heavy objects, handle lines, work with power tools, and negotiate hatches, ladders and companionways.
