Job Description

Summary

This job involves leading field work to manage and protect natural areas in South Carolina, including tasks like conducting controlled burns, monitoring plants and animals, and maintaining equipment.

Key Requirements

  • Associate degree in technical sciences plus one year of wildlife or fisheries experience, or high school diploma plus three years of relevant experience
  • Ability to obtain a South Carolina Pesticide Applicator license
  • Class A CDL license
  • Proficiency in operating chainsaw, 4WD vehicle, winch, power tools, bushhog, and tractor/skid steer
  • Ability to lift heavy objects and work independently under challenging conditions
  • Experience with GPS applications and computer skills in Excel, Outlook, and Word
  • Strong communication skills, record-keeping abilities, and experience working with volunteers

Full Job Description

This employee will serve as lead technician, coordinating field work and performing necessary monitoring, trapping, reporting and management activities as needed.

Job Duties Include:
  • Conducting and assisting with management activities for Region 1 Heritage Preserves (HP).
  • Assisting HP Manager with identifying, coordinating, and prioritizing field activities.
  • With minimal supervision, plans and implements prescribed burns. This includes:
    • Coordinating the construction and management of firebreaks on Region 1 HPs
    • Evaluating burn effectiveness and vegetation response
    • Providing recommendations for upcoming burn season
  • Assisting HP Manager and other DNR staff with rare plant/animal surveys and monitoring on Region 1 HPs.
  • Assisting biologists with state-wide game and non-game wildlife surveys in Region 1 as opportunities arise.
  • Performing other related duties as needed, in cooperation with other WFF and LE staff.
  • Ensuring the maintenance of Department-issued equipment.
  • Supervising and assisting in maintenance of storage building and grounds.
  • Assisting with procurement process when purchasing new equipment.

Requirements

An associate degree in the technical sciences and one (1) year of experience in wildlife or fisheries work; or a high school diploma and three (3) years of experience in wildlife or fisheries work.

Ability to obtain a South Carolina Pesticide Applicator license.

Qualifications

Ability to lift heavy objects and to operate a chainsaw, 4WD vehicle, winch, power tools, bushhog and tractor/skid steer. Ability to identify and handle game/non-game animals and native/non-native plants desirable. Experience with GPS applications, and computer applications that include Excel, Outlook and Word. Ability to work independently under challenging conditions. Ability to communicate effectively with the public. Good record keeping skills and the ability to sometimes work with volunteers. Class A CDL license.
