Job Description

Summary

This job involves being an expert in designing, testing, and supporting safety mechanisms for naval explosives and weapons systems, from initial development through ongoing use in the military.

You'll work closely with Navy programs, industry partners, and review panels to ensure these components are safe, reliable, and meet standards.

It's a great fit for experienced engineers or scientists with deep knowledge in munitions technology who enjoy solving complex technical challenges in a government defense setting.

Key Requirements

  • At least one year of specialized experience at GS-13 level or equivalent in fuze design, production, or safe and arming devices
  • Technical knowledge of mechanical and electrical fuzes, including sensors, timing, and operational environments
  • Experience designing and testing fuze devices for various munitions like missiles, torpedoes, guns, and mines
  • Participation in or support for Fuze and Initiation Safety Technical Review Panel (FISTRP) reviews, including preparing materials and reviewing designs
  • Knowledge of life-cycle and survivability predictive methods, testing for fuzes, and fuze-warhead interfaces
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, physical science, physics, or chemistry (per OPM standards for professional positions)
  • U.S. citizenship and ability to obtain security clearance for sensitive defense work

Full Job Description

You will serve as a Fuze Subject Matter Expert in the Explosive Ordnance Engineering Group (SEA 05) in the Naval Systems Engineering Directorate (SEA 05) of NAVSEA HQ FIELD SUPPORT.

In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-13) or pay band (NH-03) in the federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector demonstrating the following: (1) technical knowledge of fuze design and/ or production- safe and arming devices, preferably mechanical and electrical fuze/Safe and Arm (S&A) knowledge; (2) designing and testing fuze/S&A devices used for munitions of various types (i.e.

mining, large caliber guns, missiles, torpedoes, etc.); (3) participating in or supporting Fuze and Initiation Safety Technical Review Panel (FISTRP) board reviews- preparing material, reviewing designs, etc.; (4) technical knowledge of fuze sensor types and understanding of fuze/S&A timing and operational environments; (5) technical knowledge of life-cycle and survivability predictive methods, and/or testing for fuzes; and (6) technical knowledge of fuze and warhead interfaces and/or initiation train expertise.

  • You will support Naval munitions fuzing through direct support to Navy and Marine Corps munition programs from design and development through production and in-fleet service.
  • You will directly support programs maintaining relevant specifications and standards within the warranted area.
  • You will support industry partners under contract for the Navy along with partners/performers of the Navy.
  • You will Support the Naval and Department of War mission within the fuzing technology realm.
  • You will serve as a Subject Matter Expert and master professional engineer/scientist responsible for the acquisition development, fielding, and sustainment of the program.
  • You will incorporate standardization, commonality, configuration management, risk management, design for life cycle support, test and evaluation, modeling, and simulation.
  • You will serve as a recognized expert consultant and authority to ensure reliability and accuracy in the identification, development, and implementation of recommended solutions to highly complex problems.
  • You will establish and maintain internal and external channels of communication across government and industry.
