Full Job Description

The King County Sheriff’s Office has an immediate opening at our Advanced Training Section (ATS) for an Integrated Arrest Tactics Coordinator. This position will focus on physical arrest tactics (control, compliance, de-escalation) to prepare deputies for physical demands and suspect control.

This position reports to the Captain of the Advanced Training Section and operates with a moderate degree of autonomy as a participant in several training teams across a wide range of skill sets.

These jobs require physical stamina and professional conduct to create realistic, high-pressure situations.

Duties

The primary duty is to provide instruction on integrated arrest tactics.

Such instruction will include concepts surrounding different levels of citizen compliance, different levels of subject resistance, various techniques to obtain control over non-compliant citizens, and proper and lawful application of these concepts.

This position requires creation, planning, and participation in lessons including physically demanding mock scenarios which will require dynamic movement and physical skills to adequately perform.

Candidates will be expected to take physical strikes or various kinds in the course of their duties.

Recurring formal and informal feedback and evaluations to students may be required during or outside of instructional sessions.

Requirements

  • Assist in conducting training for KCSO Basic and Advanced Training Units.
  • Record keeping for training documentation
  • Suit actor in KCSO C/DT scenario-based training
  • Assist in KCSO C/DT Instructor Cadre development.
  • Role player in IAT practical skills training.
  • Assist with equipment and training space maintenance and sanitation.
  • Maintain safety awareness and injury prevention during training.
  • Assist with KCSO IAT program development.
  • C/DT skill demonstration assistance.
  • Various roles in conducting department wide In Service training, to include; safety monitor, setup/break down of training site, equipment management, instruction assistant, role player, etc.

Qualifications

  • Either hold or be willing and eligible to obtain certification through the CJTC Control and Defensive Tactics Program.
  • Able to demonstrate an understanding of both the technical and instructional methods as well as the philosophy theoretical underpinnings that will enhance teaching effective, efficient, and ethical use of force tactics.
  • WA State CJTC Certified Instructor
  • Formal training in defense tactics
  • Experience with instruction of de-escalation skills.
  • Understanding of and/or experience with KCSO policies, SOPs, procedures, and chain of command.
  • Recent experience with Basic Law Enforcement Academy (BLEA) training.
  • Firm understanding of exercise physiology and the principles of functional fitness.
  • Strong work ethic, self-directed, and able to work in a team-teaching environment.
  • Knowledgeable on:
    • Defensive Tactics (DT): Training on how to manage combative or resistive subjects, often featuring close-quarters combat techniques.
    • Weapon Management: Techniques to disarm subjects holding knives or blunt-force weapons.
    • Stress Management: Techniques to maintain composure and performance under extreme fatigue and simulated high-stress scenarios.
    • Equipment Familiarization: Training often requires performing tasks while wearing full duty gear, including body armor.

HIGHLY DESIRED

  • Candidate holds a current certification from CJTC in Police Tactics Instructor.
  • Candidate holds a current certification in LETCSA 6240 and is eligible for certification in LETCSA 6241.
  • Candidate with prior experience working for a police training program.

TIMELINE:
• Late April 2026: Oral Board Exam (scored interview), in-person, either in Seattle or Renton.

Candidates who pass the Oral Board Exam will be placed on the Civil Service Eligibility List in rank order. A final interview for the top-ranked candidates may be scheduled by the King County Sheriff’s Office.

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION:

UNION MEMBERSHIP: This position is not represented by a union.

WORK SCHEDULE: Typical schedule for this position is Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm with some evening, night, and weekend work as necessary. This position is overtime eligible.
