Full Job Description

This is a non-merit position. Candidates must follow the instructions in the "To Apply" section. Positions in this class are exempt from the screening and referral requirements of the Iowa Department of Administrative Services - Human Resources Enterprise.

The Iowa Insurance Division is recruiting for an Insurance Examiner 1 in the Product and Producer Licensing Bureau.

The Product and Producer Regulation Bureau reviews, approves, or disapproves property, casualty, life and health forms and, where provided by law, premium rates for certain types of insurance. It also licenses, registers, and monitors entities and individuals under the authority of the Commissioner.


Responsibilities include:
• Perform market conduct examinations and data analysis related to various entities.
• Examine all property and casualty insurance policy forms filed for use in Iowa as required by Iowa code section 515.102
• Prepare and submit objections to filings containing objectionable language and/or language that is contrary to Iowa law.
• Examine insurance product filings for insurance rates proposed to ensure applicable lines of business are fair and reasonable.
• Participate in and document interviews and discussions with company personnel, licensed entities or individuals and policyholders.
• Confers with insurance company personnel and officials regarding contents of various reports and resolves controversial or disputed issues.
• Conduct risk-based insurance market conduct analysis and examinations consistent with NAIC Market Regulation Handbook.


Candidates will demonstrate:
• Attention to detail.
• Excellent organization and communication skills.
• Ability to think critically in order to make decisions, which include measuring, calculating, reasoning, analyzing, prioritizing and synthesizing data.
• Ability to document adequate notes of investigation to document work performed.
• Proficiency in the use of personal computers, peripheral equipment and various software packages, including the Microsoft Office Suite and Google platforms.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:

  1. Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in insurance, accounting, actuarial science, risk management, finance, or business.
  2. A total of four years of education and/or full-time experience, where thirty semester hours of accredited college or university course work in insurance, accounting, actuarial science, risk management, finance, or business equals one year of full-time experience in insurance industry examination, financial analysis, quality assurance, enterprise risk management, or corporate governance.
