Job Description

Summary

This temporary summer job involves leading fun activities for kids in day camps run by the City of Pasadena, such as games, arts, sports, and outdoor adventures in local parks.

Instructors create and teach classes in areas like crafts, music, nature exploration, or environmental education to keep campers engaged and learning.

It's a great fit for energetic people with recent experience teaching youth recreation programs who enjoy working with children in a seasonal, hands-on role.

  • For Arroyo Seco Adventures Camp: Experience in outdoor adventures, ecosystems, environment, wildlife habitats, native/invasive plants, with a background in biology or earth sciences preferred
  • Ability to develop and teach assigned classes and workshops in various program areas
  • Physical ability to lift, carry, and pull 25 pounds regularly; bend, twist, and squeeze with hands and arms
  • Availability for temporary summer schedule: up to 8 weeks, 20-40 hours/week, starting June 8, 2026, through July 31, 2026 (dates subject to change)
  • Skills in maintaining attendance records, coordinating equipment/supplies, and facilitating group activities including end-of-camp showcases

THIS IS A TEMPORARY SEASONAL JOB TO SUPPORT THE SUMMER RECREATION DAY CAMP PROGRAM.


When the school year comes to an end, the City of Pasadena offers traditional Summer Day Camps, Enrichment Camps, Outdoor Neighborhood Park Camps, and a unique Arroyo Seco Adventure Camp.

The Traditional Summer Day Camps offer youth opportunities to get involved in group games, sports, arts and crafts, swimming, computers, science, and music.

These camps include Victory Park Camp, Villa Parke Camp, and Robinson Park Camp. All camps facilitate an array of activities, including science, art, sports, fitness, and dance.

The Outdoor Neighborhood Park Camps give campers an opportunity to enjoy arts & crafts, physical fitness games and challenges, dance, and enrichment activities.

The Arroyo Seco Adventures Camp offers participants an opportunity to learn about our local, natural resources in a fun and exciting way.

This outdoor camp pairs environmental education with traditional camp activities.

Participants go on nature lead walks learning about conservation of environmental resources, native plants and local wildlife.

Youth participate in archery, horseback riding and hiking, and practice their gardening and survival skills.

Instructors (Summer) under general supervision develop and teach assigned recreation classes and workshops in a wide variety of program areas.

The ideal candidate will possess recent experience developing and teaching recreation classes and workshops in either arts & crafts, computers, coding, dance, drama, eco systems, Lego Robotics, native/invasive plants, music, nature, outdoor adventures, outdoor education, wildlife habitats, or sports & fitness.

For the Arroyo Seco Adventures Camp, the ideal candidate will possess recent experience developing and teaching recreation classes in outdoor education, outdoor adventures, eco systems, environment, wildlife habitats, and native/invasive plants.

A background in biology and/or earth sciences is also ideal.


WORK SCHEDULE:

Instructor position is a temporary assignment for up to eight weeks depending on program needs. Work hours may vary (20-40 hours/week) depending on assignment.

Summer Day Camp staff must be available to work beginning Monday, June 8, 2026, through Friday, July 31, 2026. Dates subject to change depending on program need.

  • Develops and teaches assigned classes and workshops in program areas such as arts and crafts, outdoor education, outdoor adventures, eco systems, environment, wildlife habitats, native/invasive plants, dance, drama, music, science, computers, nature and sports for youth and/or adults.
  • Determines and recommends supplies and equipment needed for assigned classes.
  • Transports and ensures security of equipment and supplies issued.
  • Maintains attendance and other records as required.
  • Physical strength and agility to lift, carry, and pull 25 pounds on a regular basis; bend and twist in all directions, and squeeze with hands and arms.
  • Coordinates programming for participant's end of camp showcase for parents.

Qualifications

Minimum qualifications:

  • A minimum of one year of recent experience teaching outdoor education and/or recreational activities in one of the program areas listed above or one year of education in Environmental/Recreation/Physical Education or related field, or combination.

Desired qualifications:

  • Experience working with youth with disabilities and other special needs is desired.

SELECTION PROCESS:

The selection process may consist of any combination of training and experience evaluation, Subject Matter Expert (SME) review, structured interview panel, and department-level interviews.

Additional Information

Candidates are required to successfully complete a medical examination including drug screen and a criminal background live scan screen consistent with current state and federal law.

Physical strength and agility to lift up to 25 lbs., bend in all directions, squeeze with arms and hands, pull and lower up to 25 lbs.

Summer Day Camp staff must be available to work beginning Monday, June 8, 2026, through Friday, July 31, 2026. Dates subject to change depending on program need.
