Job Description

Summary

This job involves leading religious activities, counseling inmates, and managing volunteer programs inside a state prison for men.

It requires working some evenings and Sundays within a secure facility.

A good fit would be someone with experience as a religious leader who is compassionate, organized, and comfortable in a correctional environment.

Key Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in religion, theology, divinity, or human services (e.g., counseling, social work, criminal justice)
  • Three years of professional experience as a religious leader in community or institutional settings, including one year equivalent to Institution Chaplain P11
  • Certification or endorsement by the recognized endorsing body of the religious faith
  • Ability to work some evenings and Sundays
  • Substitution option: Associate's degree in religious studies or human services plus two years (4,160 hours) of experience performing religious services (e.g., marriages, burials, baptisms)
  • No felony convictions; must complete sentence including parole/probation if applicable
  • Completion of Non-Custody New Employee Training (40-80 hours)

Full Job Description

Plan and coordinate all religious programming for a multi-level correctional facility including service scheduling and supervision; volunteer recruitment, training and supervision; religious special event planning, enabling and supervision; pastoral counseling; supervision of religious purchases/orders, identifying appropriate religious vendors, and serving as religious resources for staff. This position is the recognized resource for pastoral, religious, and spiritual needs of the inmate population. This position will require working some evenings and on Sunday. The position is located within the secure perimeter of a multi-level correctional facility housing 1224 male prisoners.

Requirements

Education
Possession of a bachelor's degree in religion, theology, divinity, or in an area of human services such as guidance and counseling, social work, criminal justice, etc.

Experience
Three years of professional experience as a religious leader either in a community or institutional setting equivalent to an Institution Chaplain, including one year equivalent to an Institution Chaplain P11.

Qualifications

Possession of an associate's degree in religious studies or an area of human services and two years (4,160 hours) of experience performing religious services such as marriages, burials, baptisms, and any other services unique to the particular faith may be substituted for the education requirement.

Certification or endorsement by the recognized endorsing body of the religious faith.

Certain positions may require that only individuals with credentials in a particular religious faith be considered.

New hires to the MDOC along with previous MDOC employees that are returning after being away from the department for more than two years will complete Non-Custody New Employee Training (NCNET) either 40 hours or 80 hours of initial in-person training based on their level of offender contact and job classification.

All new employees will complete additional online training to successfully complete their non-custody new employee training.
