This job involves working as an electronics specialist in a federal prison, where you'll supervise inmate workers in designing and producing electronic products like circuit boards and cables for a government-run industry program.
You'll also research product ideas, evaluate if they're feasible to make with inmate labor, and adjust designs to ensure they're profitable and safe.

To be considered for the position, you must meet the following qualification requirements.
Basic Requirements: Education: Undergraduate and Graduate Education: Major study -- business administration, industrial management, engineering, applied sciences, or other fields related to the position.
OR Experience: Specialized Experience (for positions above GS-5): Experience that demonstrated a practical knowledge of the methods, materials, machinery, and facilities used in industrial production operations (which may include exploration, extraction, refining, manufacturing, or processing).
This knowledge may have been gained in work such as: Management or supervision of production operations.
Industrial planning, industrial engineering, or plant engineering, involving determination of facilities and layout.
Process or methods development involving production practices associated with chemical, mechanical, electronic, textile, or food industries.
Development of specifications to define product requirements. Sales engineering or buying that required a comprehensive knowledge of production operations.
Planning and administering industrial quality control and inspection systems and programs. Comprehensive survey and analysis of industrial operations, organization, capacity, etc.
Interpreting and applying contract clauses and government acquisition regulations. Development of plans to determine material requirements and/or schedules for production management.
AND In addition to meeting the Basic Requirements above, applicants must have: Education: Ph.D.
or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.M., if related.
Graduate Education: Major study - - business administration, industrial management, engineering, applied sciences, or other fields related to the position.
OR Experience: You must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade level.
To be creditable, this experience must have equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position and must typically be in or related to the position to be filled.
Some examples of this qualifying experience are: Experience in a trade or craft that required intensive knowledge of electronics principles, techniques, methods and precedents.
Experience as a planner and estimator in analyzing designs for production purposes. Experience in Military Electronics, Aviation Electronics or Nuclear propulsion.
OR Combination of Education and Experience: You may have a combination of successfully completed higher education and experience.
This experience must have equipped you with the particular qualifications to perform the major duties of this position as described above.

**Your eligibility for consideration will be based on your responses to the questions in the application.** Major Duties:
Functions as an Electronics Industrial Specialist for Federal Prison Industries (UNICOR) at a Bureau of Prisons’ (BOP) federal correctional facility.
Supervises and arranges work assignments for inmates in the design and production of a wide range of UNICOR products.
Performs research, evaluation, and development of pricing of circuit card and cable assemblies.
Determines whether a product is suitable for possible manufacturing by UNICOR based on capabilities of the inmate work force, quantity of the product, and whether the item meets the criteria of profitable product for the corporation.
Performs reengineering and design changes on existing test devices and other electronic apparatus. Reviews all solicitations ensuring that UNICOR can manufacture or assemble requested items.
Involved in the marketing of products that are manufactured or assembled by UNICOR Electronics Business Group.
Along with all other correctional institution employees, incumbent is charged with responsibility for maintaining security of the institution.
The staff correctional responsibilities precede all others required by this position and are performed on a regular and recurring basis.
