About the Position: This developmental position is an Industrial Hygiene Technician at Corpus Christi, Texas.

This is a Direct Hire Solicitation Salary negotiation may be available for those candidates who are new to Federal service. Non-Federal work experience may be creditable for leave purposes.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

GS-7 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes identifying potential health hazards; ensuring compliance with established occupational safety and health regulations; or utilizing automated systems to prepare a variety of technical reports.

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).

OR Education: One year of progressively higher level graduate education in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as: Industrial Hygiene, Safety & Occupational Health Management.

OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%.

To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 18.

Add the two percentages.

GS-9 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes conducting inspections and preparing reports using automated systems; evaluating potential health hazards to recommend mitigating courses of action; and training employees in safety or occupational health subjects.

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-08).

OR Education: Two years of progressively higher level graduate education or a master's degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as: Industrial Hygiene, Safety & Occupational Health Management.

OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%.

To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12.

Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages.

Position can be filled at any level (GS-7; or GS-9) with noncompetitive promotion to the next grade levels are authorized until you reach the full performance level of GS-9; pending time in grade requirements and demonstrated ability to perform the next higher/target level grade duties.

Major Duties:

  • Conduct surveys, independently or in conjunction with an industrial hygienist, to identify and evaluate potential health hazards.
  • Prepare written reports of health hazard assessments under the guidance of the chief.
  • Perform respirator fit testing per appropriate standards and guidelines.
  • Maintain records associated with maintenance and calibration of equipment.
  • Enter data collected from surveys of air samples into a reporting system database.
  • Coordinate, schedule, and conduct regular inspections of all work areas to ensure that workers are wearing the required personal protective devices and that work practices designed to minimize or eliminate hazards are being followed.
  • Serve as a point of contact for external organizations providing independent comprehensive industrial hygienist services.
  • Maintain accountability of assigned equipment.
