This job involves installing, maintaining, repairing, and inspecting automated and electrical systems and equipment at a VA medical center in Tampa, Florida, ensuring everything runs smoothly in a healthcare setting.

Employee will be assigned to the Maintenance and Operations Section, VA Medical Center, Tampa, FL, serving as a Journeyman Industrial Equipment Mechanic installing, maintaining, repairing, and inspecting a variety of automated/electrical systems and equipment.
PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: Employee makes repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms, and where the systems and equipment worked on are in hard-to-reach places.
Employee frequently stands, stoops, bends, kneels, climbs and works in tiring and uncomfortable positions.
Frequently handles, lifts, carries, and sets up parts and equipment that weigh up to (50 pounds). Occasionally, lifts and carry items that weigh over (50 pounds) with help.
Employee will work within the medical facility's operating functions and must use all appropriate safety tools and clothing, etc. to protect oneself, other staff, visitors and patients.
Other assignments can be in remote areas such as sub-basement, machinery rooms, rooftops, roads and walkways.
Work is done inside and outside, and is usually dirty, dusty, and greasy and may contain asbestos or in areas where bad smelling fumes are present which may require respirator and will include working with flammable and toxic liquids.
Works off ladders and scaffolds. Outside work will entail exposure to a variety of weather conditions.
Employee is frequently exposed to the possibility of uncomfortable heat conditions, live steam, and hot pipes. The employee is subjected to various hazardous conditions.
Must observe all local and National Safety Codes. Must know and comply with all the safety factors of the trade to prevent fires and injury to patients and personnel.
Employee must wear respirator and disposable clothing including coveralls and covers for head, hands and feet when working in areas of possible asbestos decontamination.
Work assignments involve a thorough knowledge of hazardous material handling and related activities. Employee is required to successfully complete a variety of hazardous material classes.
There is a possibility of exposure to hazardous chemicals and fumes from spills and/or leaks and may be required to wear protective clothing (e.g., rubber boots, coveralls, goggles, aprons, gloves, respirator, etc.).
Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualifications.

Duties include, but may not be limited to the following: Performs the installation, maintenance, repair and inspection of all varieties of mechanical equipment used at the facility.
Has responsibility for the installation, maintenance and repair of all dietetic equipment, all metal parts of buildings and mechanical equipment in the hospital.
Performs work involving maintenance and servicing of all building service machinery such as conveyors, fire pumps, medical air compressors, hot and cold-water circulation pumps, sewage lift pumps and associated hardware, etc.
Inspects, maintains and repairs personal property including hospital beds, wheelchairs, lifts, stretchers, dietetic tray conveyors and servicing equipment.
Performs work involving the maintenance, repair and adjusting of vertical and horizontal conveyors.
Performs preventive maintenance inspections as indicated on printouts and workorders, including lubrication and adjustments.
Performs work involving adjustment, maintenance and repair of a variety of door closing devices, including fully automatic, semi-automatic, electric, hydraulic and spring loaded mechanical types.
Assists with setting close tolerance combinations, and repairs medication dispensing carts and other electronic locking devices.
Performs layout work, bench work, machine work and hand tool work in shaping, fitting. finishing sheet metal, and machine parts.
Assembles, installs, and repairs all machinery and equipment made of metal and fabricate parts when required.
Completes custom fabrication jobs on ductwork for different types of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, sheet metal fabrication, steel fabrication and design, either with or without formal plans or blueprints.
Welds with gas and electric including heliarc.
Makes rough sketches or prints of newly installed equipment to be delivered to the shop supervisor for the purpose of updating the master equipment blueprints.
