Job Description

Summary

This job is for a Human Resources Specialist in the U.S.

Department of Justice's Attorneys' Offices in Macon, Georgia, where you'll handle everyday HR tasks like helping with hiring, benefits, and employee paperwork to support the team's operations.

It's a mid-level role at GS-9 that involves assisting or advising on various HR areas, making it ideal for someone with a couple of years of HR experience or relevant graduate education who enjoys organizing details and supporting people in a government setting.

Key Requirements

  • One year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-07 (for GS-9) or GS-09 (for GS-11) in federal service, focusing on HR support in areas like recruitment, classification, benefits, performance management, or employee relations
  • Master's degree or equivalent graduate education in a related field (e.g., Human Resources) for GS-9, or Ph.D./3 years of graduate education for GS-11

GS-09: To be eligible for the GS-9, you must meet at least ONE of the following conditions: Specialized experience, education, OR a combination of education and experience.

Specialized Experience: Applicants must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 level in Federal service.

Specialized experience includes: assisting in providing administrative human resources support in two or more functional areas, which include the following: classification, recruitment and placement, employee benefits, human resource development, performance management, and employee relations, processing and documenting a wide variety of employee actions that involve different forms, authorities, natures of action, and regulatory authorities, assisting employees in preparing paperwork related to HR actions; review finished forms for completeness and adequacy; provide information on HR systems, processes, and procedures; and/or provide brochures, applications and other HR related documents to employees.

Education: One of the following types of education in a related field (e.g., Human Resources): a Master's or equivalent graduate degree (such as an LL.B.); OR 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree.

Education at the graduate level must be in an accredited college or university and must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the duties of the position.

Combining Education and Experience Combinations of successfully completed graduate education and experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements.

In order to qualify based on a combination, graduate education must be in excess of 1 full year.

GS-11: To be eligible at the GS-11 level, you must meet at least ONE of the following conditions: Specialized experience, education, OR a combination of education and experience.

Specialized Experience: Applicants must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 level in Federal service.

Specialized experience includes: providing administrative human resources support in two or more functional areas, which include the following: advising management on recruitment methods and strategies; generating vacancy announcements; issuing certificates/lists of qualified candidates; applying basic classification principles to review position descriptions; administering guidance on pay and leave; providing advice regarding employee benefits and retirement and conducting research to solve complex human resources situations.

Education: One of the following types of education in a related field (e.g., Human Resources): a Ph.D or equivalent doctoral degree (such as an LL.M.); OR 3 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree.

Education at the graduate level must be in an accredited college or university and must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the duties of the position.

Combining Education and Experience: Combinations of successfully completed graduate education and experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements.

In order to qualify based on a combination, graduate education must be in excess of 2 full years.

Interagency Career Transition Assistance Plan (ICTAP)- The ICTAP provides eligible displaced Federal competitive service employees with selection priority over other candidates for competitive service vacancies.

If selected for this position, you will join a well-respected team that is responsible as a Human Resources Specialist with the United States Attorney's Office, Middle District of Georgia.

Typical work assignments will include: Provides advice and assistance to management and employees on human resources related matters.

Provides assistance to employees and management in the areas of employee benefits, such as health insurance, retirement, life insurance, etc.

Provides advice on compensation, including but not limited to, basic pay, premium pay, and the administration of leave. Prepares pre-employment security packages for all selectees for processing.

Prepares, reviews, and provides advice on performance work plans, including performance elements and standards.

Researches, interprets, and applies such laws and regulations to individual situations and questions raised by employee and supervisors.

Runs payroll reports and assists with payroll transactions such as time and attendance, leave errors, accounting code information, etc.

Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.
