Full Job Description

Ready to turn classroom knowledge into real-world HR experience? The Human Resources Bureau at the Iowa Department of Transportation is looking for a motivated student to join us as our next HR Generalist Intern!


As part of our team, you’ll work side-by-side with HR professionals and take on projects that have real impact. You’ll dive into the world of HR and explore functions like:

  • Pay period processing and systems, FMLA regulations, retirement, benefits, and new employee onboarding
  • Start to end hiring process and recruitment strategies
  • Advertising coordination and community engagement efforts
  • State government position classification system and processes
  • State government compensation strategies and processes

But that’s just the beginning! You’ll also lead two exciting initiatives:

  • Walk Across Iowa: A RAGBRAI-inspired walking challenge that brings employees together in a friendly competition. You’ll manage everything from kickoff communications to tracking progress and awarding winners.
  • Internship Community: Help design and launch a brand-new program that connects interns across the agency, providing resources and support.


With such a wide variety to learn and initiatives to run, we’re looking for a student who can commit to a year-long internship and work in-office at our Central Office in Ames, Iowa.

During academic semesters, your schedule and hours will be flexible to accommodate classes and activities, with full-time hours available during breaks.
