Summary

This job as a Human Resources Assistant at U.S.

As a Human Resources Assistant, you will perform a variety of HR Administrative tasks and services in support of one of the following branches: Benefits and Retirement, Classification, Processing and Records, or Recruitment and Placement..

The qualifications for this position must be met by 11:59 PM (Eastern Time) on 03/09/2026.

Time in Grade does not apply to Delegated Examining Announcements, any reference to Time in Grade in the questionnaire will not apply to the rating and ranking of applicants.

GS-05: You qualify at the GS-05 level if you possess one (1) year of specialized experience, equivalent to at least the GS-04 level in the federal government, which has equipped you with the skills needed to successfully perform the duties of the position.

You must have experience performing the following duties: Using computer programs to process or produce required materials; Referring inquiries about specific issues or actions to the appropriate personnel; Reviewing forms and files for missing data, completeness, and accuracy.

OR You may substitute successful completion of 4 years above high school for the experience required at the GS-05 grade level.

This education must have been obtained from an accredited college or university. One year of full-time undergraduate study is defined as 30 semester or 45 quarter hours.

GS-06: You qualify at the GS-06 level if you possess one (1) year of specialized experience, which is equivalent to at least the GS-05 level in the federal government, that equipped you with the skills needed to successfully perform the duties of the position.

You must have experience performing the following duties: Reviewing documents for accuracy and compliance; Maintaining files and records in computer databases or automated systems; Researching and resolving routine customer service inquiries; Developing relationships with internal and or external customers and business partners.

GS-07: You qualify at the GS-07 level if you possess one (1) year of specialized experience, which is equivalent to at least the GS-06 level in the federal government, that equipped you with the skills needed to successfully perform the duties of the position.

You must have experience performing the following duties: Using computer software programs to produce office support materials; Assisting multiple groups to complete shared tasks or objectives; Researching and answering inquiries concerning a variety of HR matters; Collecting and compiling HR-related data and statistics, including running analytical reports; Applying fact finding and researching techniques to prepare responses to customers.

GS-08: You qualify at the GS-08 level if you possess one (1) year of specialized experience, which is equivalent to at least the GS-07 level in the federal government, that equipped you with the skills needed to successfully perform the duties of the position.

You must have experience performing the following duties: Providing information and guidance related to Human Resources (HR) or administrative policies and procedures; Entering data into databases or electronic systems to track personnel related tasks; Maintaining files or personnel records and resolving discrepancies; Researching and applying HR rules, regulations and policies to complete assignments; Reviewing and maintaining HR information.

  • Organizational Location: This position is located in the Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, within Human Resources Operations Center and are assigned based on the need of the agency.
  • The responsibilities described are for the full performance level. At developmental grade levels, assignments will be of more limited scope performed with less independence, and limited complexity.
  • The incumbent will be assigned to one of the following branches within the Human Resources Operations Center: Recruitment and Placement, Benefits and Retirement, Processing/Records, and/or Classification.
  • Responsible for the pre-employment process to include extending tentative job offers, initiating and tracking drug testing and medical reviews, establishing start dates, and responding accordingly to inquiries while providing continual HR support.
  • Researching and applying laws, regulations, policies, and precedents of Federal employee retirement, group life insurance, health benefits, and Thrift Savings Plan programs to provide advice and guidance to management, employees, and beneficiaries.
  • Responsible for processing personnel and payroll actions to include coding, calculating service computation dates, within-grade increases, pay adjustments, system errors, and accessions and separations into the National Finance Center (NFC).
  • Reviewing requests for personnel actions for accurate information and data integrity; responsible for periodic quality reviews and ensuring personnel actions are processed within established timelines.
