This position is located within the Environmental Management Services Division of a VA Medical Center. This position is under the direct supervision of the Housekeeping Supervisor or designee.
This position performs both janitorial and custodial services at the VA Medical Center located in Fort Wayne, IN.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is normally performed indoors with adequate heat, light, and ventilation.
Some work may be performed outdoors where there may be exposed to varying degrees of heat and cold as well as inclement weather.
PPE may be required in some circumstance as exposure to possible contagious diseases, blood and bloody secretion are inherent to this position.
Care is required to avoid serious injuries (i.e., broken bones) when working on ladders, or when using 30-100-pound power equipment or handling hazardous materials. Major Duties:
Major Duties The position is delegated responsibility for assigning staff for routine and non-routine duties on a daily and a project-by-project basis.
Non-routine duties require that the position reorganize work schedules efficiently to ensure work is accomplished in a timely manner.
This position is required to coordinate work with supervisors of other services within the positions area of jurisdiction so as not to interrupt patient care or other activities.
The position is responsible for the cleaning of all patient areas, corridor spaces throughout Medical Center, Operating Rooms, and all other areas as assigned.
The position is responsible for assuring the efficient and economical accomplishment of work assignments of subordinates within established policies and schedules set by higher levels of supervision.
The position plans daily and weekly assignments, scheduling periodic work for areas of responsibility, taking into consideration the availability of personnel and equipment to meet established priorities.
The position trains staff and ensure that they are using the patient centered care principles in terms of customer service to patients, patients' family members and personnel.
Provides on-the job training for subordinates as individual needs dictate.
Due to the constant change in the type of patients, provides proper on-the-job training to ensure the housekeeping duties are effectively accomplished.
The position provides special direction to new employees to prepare them for individual assignments, procedures, and safety policies.
The position schedules regular meetings with staff to make them aware of new procedures or directives.
The position keeps the supervisor informed as to the condition of staff, unusual occurrences or matters that should be brought to the attention of their supervisor.
Keeps subordinates abreast of proper methods, procedures and uses of equipment and supplies; control the use of supplies and equipment to affect cost control within the unit.
The position may be assigned to conduct in-use testing of equipment and/or supplies, providing feedback regarding their observations.
The position ensures all safety regulations and procedures are observed and may on occasion be required to conduct training classes on specific safety issues.
The position may supervise the daily distribution of uniforms and textiles to the designated areas and persons and ensures record keeping is timely and accurate.
The position approves leave requests for subordinates, counsels' employees, and recommends disciplinary action to a higher-level supervisor whenever non-compliance with policy warrants.
The position makes formal appraisal of subordinates works performance and conduct.
The position is responsible for the coordination of activities with other services, including rearranging work schedules during remodeling, painting and relocation of offices, clinics or patient wards and other duties which help coordinate moves.
The position is responsible for the quality inspection of assigned areas, recording discrepancies in cleanliness, needed maintenance repairs, broken or inadequately stored furnishings and equipment.
Provides documented inspection reports and acts on unaccomplished work.
The position is responsible for the removal of furniture in need of repair and/or replacement along with the initiation of an electronic work request.
The position is responsible for the review of procedures, methods and sequence of tasks performed by employees under their supervision.

The duties necessitate considerable dexterity, hand, foot, and eye coordination, and concentration as well as visual acuity to see dirt, dust and debris.
