Job Description

Summary

This job involves leading a horticulture and grounds maintenance program at a correctional facility, where you'll supervise inmates in tasks like planting, gardening, and equipment upkeep to keep the grounds looking good.

It's a hands-on role that includes managing a greenhouse and ensuring safety in a secure environment.

Full Job Description

  • Under general supervision from the Chief Horticulturist, plan, monitor and supervise a horticulture program for inmates at your assigned location and other sites (if applicable).

  • Perform duties relating to the function of horticulture/grounds maintenance activities working with Inmates to support a horticulture/grounds maintenance program and other horticulture special projects as assigned.

  • Provide supervision and instruction to inmate participants/assigned staff for the care of the complex grounds concerning landscape installation, maintenance, vegetable gardening and seasonal color.

  • Maintain equipment.

  • Responsible for inventory of chemicals, accountable for tools/equipment.

  • Responsible for the security of the work area.

  • Establish and maintain a greenhouse.

  • Assist with special event support.

  • Must obtain SC applicator's pesticide license within first year of employment.

Must successfully complete four (4) weeks of SCDC Basic Training upon hire.
