This job involves working as an architect focused on preserving and maintaining historic buildings and sites in Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks.
You'll design repairs, oversee construction projects, and ensure cultural resources are protected while working seasonally for most of the year.

This position is located in Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks, in the Cultural Resources Branch. This is a Career-Seasonal appointment.
Career-Seasonal appointments are permanent positions and include the same benefits as Career appointments, but do not provide work on a year-round basis.

As a condition of employment for accepting this position, you will be required to serve a probationary period of 1 year, during which your fitness and whether your continued employment advances the public interest will be evaluated.
This period is an extension of the appointment process and therefore requires the agency to determine if continued employment would advance the public interest, meet the organization goals and mission of the agency, and/or otherwise promote the efficiency of the service.
In determining if your employment advances the public interest, the agency will consider: your performance and conduct; the needs and interests of the agency; whether your continued employment would advance organizational goals of the agency or the Government; and whether your continued employment would advance the efficiency of the Federal service.
Under applicable law, the employment of an individual serving a probationary or trial period automatically terminates when that period ends unless the agency affirmatively certifies, in writing, that the individual's employment should continue and that their appointment should be finalized.
In the absence of agency action to affirmatively certify continued employment beyond the probationary or trial period, such appointments are terminated.
Upon completion of your probationary period, your employment will be terminated unless you receive certification, in writing, that your continued employment advances the public interest.

To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time).
If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience.
Individual Occupational Requirement: GS-0808 Series Requirement: you must have a Bachelor's or higher degree in architecture -OR- related field that included 60 semester hours of course work in architecture -OR- related disciplines of which at least 30 semester hours were in architectural design, and 6 semester hours were in each of the following: structural technology, properties of materials and methods of construction, and environmental control systems.
OR A combination of college-level education, training, and/or technical experience that furnished a thorough knowledge of the arts and sciences underlying professional architecture, and a good understanding, both theoretical and practical, of the architectural principles, methods, and techniques and their applications to the design and construction or improvement of buildings.
The adequacy of such background must be demonstrated by at least one of the following: (1) A degree in architectural engineering OR (2) One year of experience in an architect's office or in architectural work for each year short of graduation from a program of study in architecture.
In the absence of college courses, 5 years of such experience is required.
This experience must have demonstrated acquisition of thorough knowledge of the fundamental principles and theories of professional architecture.
- AND - To qualify for this position at the GS-11 grade level, you must possess the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors).
This experience includes activities such as: applying professional architecture skills and interdisciplinary professional knowledge of the theories, principles, practices and techniques of historic architecture, architectural conservation, building preservation, stabilization, rehabilitation, and reconstruction procedures and methodologies planning and managing historic preservation projects; preparing or assisting with the preparation of engineering/architectural investigation reports on historic properties; overseeing contractor work on a historic architecture-related project; preparing engineering and architectural specifications and work plans; and your work involved a variety of conventional or more complicated design, renovation, and maintenance projects (e.g., a variety of roof types, woodworking, building facade, etc.) for structures and effect of the work resulted in improving the efficiency, economy, safety, adequacy, and aesthetics of buildings.
(You must include hours per week worked in your resume) OR EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least 3 years of higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D or equivalent doctoral degree in Architecture OR related field that included 60 semester hours of course work in architecture OR related disciplines of which at least 30 semester hours were in architectural design, and 6 semester hours were in each of the following: structural technology, properties of materials and methods of construction, and environmental control systems.

As a GS-0808-11 Historical Architect with the National Park Service, your duties will include, but are not limited to: Participates in National Historic Preservation Act Section 106 consultation and compliance activities as they relate to historic structures.
Performs architectural duties associated with review, design, treatment, and monitoring of historic and prehistoric structures.
Collaborates on interdisciplinary teams at the park level to promote cultural resource and historic preservation stewardship goals and objectives, including review and preparation of NRHP nominations.
Provides technical assistance and subject matter expertise as it relates to historic structures and districts.
Identifies research needs and suitable research designs and conducts or oversees various levels of documentary research and field investigations.
Conducts research involving historical documents, photographs, plans, drawings, and related items to develop knowledge of and data about specific historic and prehistoric structures, such as period designs.
Negotiates cooperative and interagency agreements and other cooperative instruments needed to effectively carry out resource stewardship goals.
