Full Job Description
Serves as crew leader and performs skilled manual labor in various duties such as cleaning ditches and placing sideline and crossline pipe related to work request and/or ditching activities and operations. Operates medium and heavy equipment such as motor grader, backhoe, front-end loader and belt loader in maintaining earth shoulders, roadside ditches, and outfall ditches to provide the proper drainage of roadway surfaces. Assists in devising a schedule for work to be performed by maintenance crew. Quantifies daily records of work performed and materials used, records in a system such as HMMS and assists with completing the maintenance requests and complaints forms. Instructs crew members daily in safety practices such as flagging operations, wearing of safety equipment, vehicle safety, or job site hazards. Coordinates placement of traffic control devices to properly set up a maintenance work zone according to SCDOT Work Zone Traffic Control Manual and Field Guide. Operates tandem and single axle dump trucks with trailers for hauling material and transporting equipment for maintenance and construction operations. Conducts safety inspection on all assigned vehicles and equipment. Monitors the preventative maintenance program of equipment to ensure a routine maintenance schedule is followed and to monitor equipment use and wear to prolong equipment life. Operates both portable tank mounted salt brine anti-icing equipment and standard dump truck with snow plow attachment and sand spreader to remove snow and ice from highways and bridges.. Assists Crew Foreman with managing assigned crew(s) in emergency or inclement weather operations, may include on-call personnel for extended working hours or 12-hour shifts in emergency or inclement weather operations. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Requirements
Two (2) years of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required upon entry to the position. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.
The physical demands for the essential functions involves bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and grasping. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. Walking for extended periods, treading rough terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and in natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside normal scheduled work week; especially during inclement weather.
