Full Job Description

In conjunction with highway and bridge maintenance activities, performs skilled highway maintenance worker functions and operates medium equipment such as: Combination Tractor with Side Mounted Mower, Skid Steer Loader, Tandem Dump Truck, Tractor with Large Mower > 10' wide, etc. These skilled maintenance functions include, but are not limited to: roadside and right-of-way mowing; roadside and right-of-way brush management; roadside and right-of-way limb management; mechanical and manual bridge-end vegetation management; mechanical and manual sight distance vegetation management. With various levels of formal and informal training, and in conjunction with highway and bridge maintenance activities, operates equipment such as: Asphalt Kettle, Brush Chipper, Forklift, Pipe Washer, Trailer Mounted, Snow Plow, Sweeper (Self Contained, Tractor with Mower,= 10' wide, Backhoe, Front End Loader, Slope Mower, Tractor with Ditcher, etc. Conducts daily preventative maintenance activities on all assigned medium equipment to ensure that equipment is greased and lubricated, proper coolant and oil (engine and hydraulic) levels are maintained, hoses and belts are inspected for deterioration, tires are properly inflated, and no leakages are present. Conducts safety inspection on all assigned vehicles and equipment. Monitors the preventative maintenance program of equipment to ensure a routine maintenance schedule is followed and to monitor equipment use and wear to prolong equipment life. Assists in tracking and recording daily work performed, including specific accomplishments, work locations, equipment utilized, and quantity of materials used. Removes litter, debris, and dead animals from roadway and rights-of-way. Assists in emergency or inclement weather operations; may include being available for extended hours or 12-hour shifts. Operates both anti-icing and removal equipment during snow and ice response on highways and bridges. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

Six (6) months of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required upon entry to the position. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

The physical demands for the essential functions involves bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and grasping. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. Walking for extended periods, treading rough terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and in natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside normal scheduled work week; especially during inclement weather.
