Full Job Description

Operates heavy equipment such as backhoe, excavator, front end loader, motor grader, etc. used in the construction and maintenance of highways. Hauls materials and supplies used to preform maintenance activities. Performs manual labor in building catch basins, laying pipes for driveways and other drainage structures, repairing shoulders, ditches, picks up litter, debris and dead animals. Coordinates the placement of traffic control devices to properly set up a maintenance work zone according to the SCDOT work zone traffic control field guide to warn motorist during road repairs to control flow of traffic to protect workers, general public and equipment. Performs a variety of vegetation management using equipment such as slope mowers and electric/gas powered hand tools. Conducts and documents pre-operation vehicle/equipment inspection. Reports vehicle and equipment deficiencies and damage to shop. Instructs crew members daily in safety such as flagging and vehicle safety, and wears proper PPE at all times in the highway rights of way. Operates standard dump truck with snow plow attachment and sand spreader to remove snow and ice from highways and bridges. Assists with emergencies and on call personnel. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

One (1) year of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

Physical Requirement: The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. This position requires walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies. Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis.
