Job Description

Summary

This job involves operating heavy machinery to maintain and repair highways, such as grading roads, clearing ditches, and removing snow, while also setting up traffic controls and handling materials.

Workers assist with installing signs, guardrails, and other safety features, and must be ready for emergency weather response with possible long shifts.

It's a good fit for someone with hands-on experience in construction or equipment operation who is physically fit and comfortable working outdoors in tough conditions.

Full Job Description

Operates heavy equipment such as motor graders in ditching, shoulder operations, grading and machining roads, driveway installation or snow and ice removal. Operates a combination front-end loader and backhoe to clean out drainage ditches and to install sideline and cross line pipe. Sets up traffic control according to MUTCD Standards to warn motorists of roadwork ahead. Operates tandem dump truck hauling materials to job site. Operates hand and power tools. Uses chainsaws in removal of trees and limbs from right-of-way. Assists with the installation and repair of traffic signs, pavement markings, and safety devices such as guardrails. Assists in emergency and inclement weather operations; may include being available for extended working hours or 12-hour shift. Performs other job-related duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Requirements

One (1) year of related work experience; or relevant experience may substitute for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

The physical demands for the essential functions involves bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and grasping. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. Walking for extended periods, treading rough terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and in natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside normal scheduled work week; especially during inclement weather.
