This job involves operating medium and heavy equipment like dump trucks, backhoes, and rollers to maintain and repair highways, including tasks such as pothole patching, ditch cleaning, and material hauling.
Workers also perform manual labor, set up traffic controls, and handle emergency responses during bad weather, often in tough outdoor conditions.
It's a good fit for someone with hands-on experience in construction or maintenance who is physically fit, reliable, and comfortable working long hours near traffic.
Operates medium equipment, such as a tandem dump truck for hauling materials for roadway repairs, shoulder work, pipe laying and pothole patching and a large roller (greater than 4 tons) to compact and solidify fill materials for driveways, asphalt patches and base repairs.
Operates heavy equipment, such as a backhoe for installing driveways and cleaning ditches and a front end loader to load and unload materials and supplies used for road maintenance and repairs.
Performs skilled manual labor such as performing work on shoulders, ditches, drainage structures, and pothole patching.
Assists with the placement of traffic control devices to properly set up a maintenance work zone. Serves as flagger to safely direct and control traffic in maintenance work zones.
Operates small equipment, such as a fork lift for loading and unloading supplies and materials, a roller less than 4 tons for rolling asphalt patches and driveways, and a tractor with broom for sweeping roadways.
Operates powered tools, such as a chain saw for removing downed trees and limbs and uses hand tools to perform a variety of maintenance activities.
Assists in emergency and inclement weather operations, to include operating medium or heavy duty equipment. May include being available for extended work hours or 12-hour shifts.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Six (6) months of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.
The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material.
Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
This position requires walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards.
May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies.
Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis.
