Job Description

Summary

This job involves operating heavy machinery like backhoes and mowers to maintain highways, fixing roads by patching potholes and clearing ditches, and handling tasks like removing debris or flagging traffic during repairs.

Full Job Description

Operates backhoe in the laying of cross line and driveways pipe and in the removal of trees from the rights-of-way. Operates a slope mower or motor grader in order to improve sight distance or drainage issues. Performs duties using manual labor, in such maintenance tasks as clearing of rights-of-way, cleaning drainage ditches, repairing shoulders, patching potholes, making base repairs, repairs to bridges, paving driveways, and laying sideline/cross line pipe. Removes litter, debris, and dead animals from roadway and rights-of-way. Flag traffic during road repairs to control flow of traffic to protect workers, general public, and equipment. Conducts and documents pre-trip equipment/vehicle inspection in accordance with the Department's most current rules, policies, and procedures for fleet safety. Operates chain saw in cutting trees on right-of-way. Operates Brine Truck or Truck with a plow to assist in emergency or inclement weather operations; may include being available for extended hours or 12-hour shifts. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

One (1) year of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required upon entry to the position. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

The Physical demands for essential functions involves bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and grasping. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. Walking for extended periods, treading rough terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and in natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside normal scheduled work week; especially during inclement weather.
