Job Description

Summary

This job involves hands-on work maintaining and repairing state highways and bridges, including operating medium-sized equipment like dump trucks and rollers to handle tasks such as grading roads, pouring concrete, clearing debris, and managing drainage.

Workers also assist with traffic control, snow removal during bad weather, and emergency responses, often in outdoor conditions.

Full Job Description

Performs skilled manual labor while operating medium equipment in a variety of activities associated with the construction, repair, and preservation of roads and bridges on the state highway system.

Examples include grading, setting forms, pouring/finishing concrete for curbs, gutters, sidewalks, and driveways. Performs work on shoulders, ditches, drainage structures, pavement markings, etc.

Using medium equipment such as but not limited to, Tandem Dump Truck, large roller > 4 tons, skid steer, Belt Loader. Picks up litter, debris, and dead animals.

Works with a crew of maintenance employees utilizing proper maintenance techniques, while performing duties using manual labor during roadway and right-of-way maintenance activities.

Area of work may include but not limited to, driveway installation and maintenance, construction of drainage appurtenances, maintenance of drainage appurtenances, litter/debris removal, vegetation management, bridge maintenance, and patching/paving, limb and brush trimming, sign and pavement marking maintenance, etc.

Assists with the placement of traffic control devices to properly set up a maintenance work zone. Serves as a flagger to safely direct and control traffic in maintenance work zones.

Conducts and documents pre-trip equipment/vehicle inspection in accordance with the Department's most current rules, policies and procedures for fleet safety.

Operates equipment, power tools, and hand tools to perform assigned maintenance activities.

Operates standard dump truck with snowplow attachment and salt spreader to remove snow and ice from roadways and bridges during inclement weather.

Assists in emergency operations, which may include being available for extended working hours or 12-hour shifts. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

Six (6) months of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.


The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material.

Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.

This position requires walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards.

May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies.

Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis.
